Question of the Week: Who will be the Best Players of the Future?

Team Captain
Isn't that the point of the thread? To discuss our predictions. Of course a large part of them don't pan out. If that were the case we shouldn't post at all in here.

He scored 15 goals at the age of 16/17 (and 16 goals the following season) at Anderlecht, a Europa League level team. This is enough to warrant mentioning in the thread.

I'm going to borrow from Stephen Schmidt again, specifically a post he made a week ago omparing Lukaku and Torres. Here are the summaries in pictorial form:

It clearly shows that per minute on the field, Lukaku is currently a better player than Torres (and it doesn't take context into consideration, so the fact that Torres has Mazacar feeding instead of Odwemingie, Brunt, and the likes isn't reflected. You can laugh at Torres, but despite being quite woeful, he would still start at over 85% of sides in the top leagues. And Lukaku is better. He doesn't have anything meaningful to his name yet (meaningful being scoring lots of goals in a top league or winning something), but the data and naked eye test suggest it's just a matter of time. (Full article here.)

Look at those stats above. That's what Lukaku is pulling off with intermittent playing time in a team he's been training with for only a few months, in a new environment as a young player who had hardly played in the preceding 12 months, and has been carrying a knock for some of this period. Consider what he could do in 6 years, by which time, should things not go horribly wrong, he would be playing in the same team for 4-5 years, having trained and played with the same teammates for that time, supported by a worldclass team a large part of which has also been playing together for that time. I think it would be foolish not to think he'll be a star.

A part of what makes Barca so good is that the players have been playing together for years. They know each other so well that you could put in a new, better player in their place and the team would suffer. It's possible that individually a group of players (like Mata, Oscar, Hazard) are good, but together, having played together for years they'll be much better than the sum of their parts.

Yeah, but that's based on reputation. His play doesn't warrant that at all.

I maintain that he would do well if combined with a player who'd take the bulk of the goalscoring burden off him, like a main striker or something. As a scorer, he's been crap, but in general he hasn't been that bad, it's just that he isn't doing what he's been hired to do. You could swap him for a lot of attacking mids and he'd improve the team.

Torres was an absolutely terrible buy for Chelsea especially with the players surrounding him. I feel like that purchase has Chelsea a bit snake-bit about spending big on another striker (ahem Falcao).

Generally speaking, spending obscene amounts on strikers in their prime doesn't work out and is rarely a wise investment. It isn't fiscally responsible. That said, spending so much on renovating the squad and then getting bogged down by a striker not doing his job and refusing to fix the problem is even worse. Basically, the options we have at ST are either Torres, Sturridge, Lukaku or someone new (I don't think Mata, Hazard, Moses or any of our ther youth strikers stand any chance to become the starter in this role).

We could bring Lukaku back in January, but it'd be a mistake. He's not ready (although as one of my above posts show, he'd probably be better than Torres) and he would be better served staying at West Brom and competing with Long for minutes rather than get rushed back. In the summer, should we not get anyone new, he should be guaranteed some time. Bringing someone new would have to be in January. Unless the club is willing to swap Torres for someone established, it'd make no sense to have Lukaku come back and bring in someone new at the same time. Honestly, bringing someone new would probably jeopardise Lukaku. If we stick with Torres/Sturridge, we have 3 possible outcomes: Either one of them ignites and turns good and we stick with them, they don't and we persevere until next summer and reconsider with Lukaku in the mix, or they don't and we buy someone in January.

For me, the best solution, assuming Torres fails to play as he should, would be swap him for Lewandowski or Falcao (or Cavani) or sell him and bring one of those in (more likely), with that person taking up main striker duties. When Lukaku returns next season, making him the 2nd in the line and actually give him some signifcant playing time and Sturridge can be a sub. It doesn't take into consideration the fact that Sturridge's contract is expiring whereas Torres' isn't, which could create a scenario in which we flog Sturridge, have keep Torres and have him moping around as backup while shifting Lukaku to 3rd choice. Frankly, a non-horrible alternative (would be pretty good actually) would be a straight Torres for Falcao swap (or whatever), Sturridge out, Lukaku in, and Fellaini in too (because I said so damnit), with Fellaini, Moses, Hazard, Mata and youth STs as emergency cover.

But I'd much rather just see Torres and Sturridge score 20 goals a piece.

EDIT: I think I've managed to make every thread today about Chelsea. I'm disproportionately active.

I can see the Torres-Falcao swap, Falcao doesn't belong 100% to Atleti, they couldn't keep him anymore, Roman is in love with Radamel and Torres is a Colchonero. He left Atleti to win titles, already won 2 Euros, 1 World cup, Champions League, FA cup and maybe the premiership this season, time to go back home?

Cavani wouldn't fit Chelsea, works too much off the ball doing other than goalscoring roles

Agree with most of the ones you've mentioned. I see possibilities in these too -

Christian Erriksen
Ryan Sterling
Delofou ( Barcelona B)
Rafael ( Manu )
Oxlaide Chamberlaine
Christina Tello
Thiabo Cortouis
Leno ( Bayer 04)
Cavani

I always think Chelsea must be wondering why they didn't save 30mill and buy Suarez instead. Meet Liverpool keep Torres.

At Liverpool though, Torres was phenomenal. The team relied on him. Torres original didn't suit the Chelsea system. Now the system works slightly better for him, but I think he has lost quite a bit of confidence in himself as a goal scorer.

Best player of the future? That's easy, load a game of Football Manager and see who ends up the best in ten years.

It sure worked out for me in my have from CM01-02.

Kennedy Bakircioglu, Jamie McMaster and Daniel Sjolund are well and truly amongst the world's best players right now, just as they were in my game, after leading QPR top the quadruple three times in a row from 2009-12. Oh and tits.

Yep, team is AC El Shaarawy right now...

Next week question could be who was the best player in this CL group stage. I say Willian.

Someone asked me who I thought were the best 5 teams in the world right now

(In no particular order) Bayern, Barca, Real, Dortmund... and Shakhtar.

I agree with both of you

Edit: I believe you can fit Juve and Porto easily to elite category as well ...
