I just remembered one! Fell in love with this guy when Monaco made their run to the CL Final. Was actually a big fan of Evra for the same reason until he went to United. Killer left side.

Yes! I also remember signing him on CM03/04 all the time because I liked him IRL. He's at Bastia now. I started a game with them on FM13 (don't ask me why, I don't know), but he was somehow only natural at CM and only 'competent' at left midfield. Weird.

I think completely disregarding talent is silly. It's a good question, as "who is your favourite player" - possibly emphasising favourite, not who do you think is the best.

A big part of why people like particular players is that they're good to watch etc, which can relate back to talent. Mine was Harry Kewell, until he signed for Victory, and now he isn't playing anyway. Possibly Stevie G, just through loyalty
