Questions thread

I had this idea after I got banned. You know I've got a lot of time on my hands, and I've been thinking about all sorts of things. Eventually the time came for SG as well.. The stuff I should've posted, and the stuff I shouldn't have. I never really contributed with proper stuff, I can imagine, but what about a thread where people can ask questions about stuff they're wondering about.. What ever it may be, instead of creating a new one, or going into the "I'm bored thread" - which should stick as it is.

Like you're struggling with an idea which TV I should get into my living room / which cell should I get and why / where should I go traveling.. etc.. Basic questions regarding every field that you feel you could get some advice for. I mean everyone here has some experience with life, and could probably help you out.

I myself have no questions at this stage, like normally.. But it's just a thought. If it's a rubbish post then let it sink into oblivion.

Example: I had a problem with smartphones way way back.. I asked about phones and iPod-s and what not.. I remember Alex telling me like what on earth are you on about.. "You cannot handle a touch screen?" Haha.. I'm much better now, and you were right.. These kind of cells are much better, all it took was getting used to them, but I'm not going to get into the specifics.

So I thought a thread for these kind of every day questions could be useful, you get the idea. (I only mean well, if the thread is a bad idea then just say so)

No spam or trolling would be appreciated too.

Due to slow internet, I have to download a game for like 4-10 days straight (with 8-10 hours wasted on downloading each day).

So my question is, should I do it? Is it killing my hard disk? One of my hdd already died in 1 year and I don't know how it happened. If I should not download for a long time, what should I do to download these large files?

No, it is not killing your HD. How could it? I presume you're using some kind of a torrent client to download what ever you're downloading. Just be patient and let it download for as long as it takes.

Maybe your old HD stopped functioning, because it had a defect or it was rubbish.

Dunno if creating a special partition for your file(s) is going to do anything. I mean it doesn't split the HD in the case, just virtually.

Thanks for the info. Nah, I don't download torrents. I heard it kills your HDD cause it downloads things in fragments.

I'm talking about downloading games from Origin and Steam. I also noticed that, downloading from Steam/ Origin causes my HDD to get fragmented. It happened with my old dead HDD and my new HDDs. Got 2 HDDs now, one for OS and other for games.

What worries me is that if Torrents are being downloaded in fragments and kill HDD and then downloading games from Origin/Steam fragments my HDD, it means that Origin does the same thing as torrents. I will just assume its normal and wont kill my Hdd but it still worries me.

Dunno, I'm having difficulties even coming up with an idea how to ruin a HD by downloading something. Some program maybe, but then I'd be doing it on purpose? Why would such a thing exist? Does it?

I'm no computer genius, but don't worry and download the stuff you need, especially if they come from a trusted programs like Origin and Steam. Your HD might run out of room, but this is literally the first time I've heard of something like that. I refuse to believe it, unless it was something else that did a number on your HD. Download at your own risk!

By the word you're using, do you mean like it wears it down over a long period of time?

Yeah, something like that. I am assuming that since I'm downloading for like 8-10 hours a day without any pause, its damaging my HDD. But thats the only way to download if I don't wanna wait 1-2 months to just download a game.

I guess my previous HDD was just a bad one? Even I'm not sure if its just because of downloading games.

Edit: I'll just have to wait and see what happens with this new HDD. The previous one was Western Digital, this one is Toshiba. I heard Toshiba is good.

Chygry, you travel a lot. So if you can give me some info, what can a couple do in France with 3000 euros? Not counting hotel expenses. Also I don't think anything about partying, just normal first time visiters stuff. I've been in Italy but that was with friends and mostly everything was already paid.

Which city are you going to stay in? Paris? Or are you planning to travel all over France visiting different cities? Those speed/fast trains can get you anywhere quite quickly.

It depends what you guys are interested in. Partying/clubbing is out as you told me, and a night out could cost quite a lot. So we'll cross this off.

Sightseeing?
Shopping?
Traveling all over the country?
Walking around the city(ies), enjoying alright-ish weather and checking out buildings, architecture?
Visiting "must see" places like... Like when you happen to be in Paris then Champs-Élysées, Eiffel tower - the lines are usually so long, so getting up there would mean that you'd probably have to stand in line for about an hour or so, depends on the time. September isn't really a tourist season, but there are always loads of them in Paris.
Walking next to the Seine river? There are also some boat tours, can't tell anything about them, though.
Montmartre is a nice play with a great view to the city.
There are plenty of museums if they interest you.
Louvre cost like 5 euros and is worth visiting. The place with that glass pyramid.
Sorbonne university.
There are bus tours that introduce you the whole city and the main and most famous places. "Hop on/Hop off" or what ever. It costs 20-30 euros I think. Paris has a neat metro system, so I'd rather travel using that.
Train tickets to other cities are probably around 30 to 100 euros, depends where you want to go.
Restaurants? You can get a steak or something else quality for around 12-22e, or more if you go to some high end place. It doesn't even have to be one, sometimes location is enough. Drinks are like 5-6e for beer, 6-10 for a glass of wine, again it depends.

That's pretty much the basics about the capital. I've never been to anywhere else in France, so I'm not really in the position to recommend something. Some wineyards/wine tasting in the countryside?

3000 euros? That's more than enough, I guess. For how long are you planning to stay over there? I can't see you spending more than 40e per face on food per day. You'll have enough money to do some shopping etc.

This is all I can say at the moment.

And where were you in Italy? Just wondering.

I forgot to tell you the time, probably a week, maybe two if I can get some more money.

Traveling all over the country?
Probably staying in Paris most of the time and some days to travel to other places, I must go to Giverny.
Walking around the city(ies)? Yes
enjoying alright-ish weather and checking out buildings, architecture? Yes.

Me and some friends won a tour through Italy in a competition. They paid mostly everything, they gave us 4 scooters to travel around Italy, we started in Rome, then went to Florence and Venice and ended in Milan. We visited a bunch of towns in between as well.

Week or two? If you split the ~3000e or more between the two of you, both of you will have around 100e spending money per day, which would be more than enough. A week then 200e. I mean you don't really need much more, I think.

Anyway, the whole trip sounds like fun.

Did you go to Italy in 2014 by any chance? Sounds like a memorable journey, most of it having been free probably didn't hurt either.

I went to Firenze last summer too, spectacular city I have to say.

Yes, 2014, it feels like so long ago. It was an awesome experience, the places, the people, being in a place where nobody understands your crappy english and even crappier italian, it was a good time. My friends had a lot of action there, I was such a retard back then I didn't get any. My luck has improved since then. But man I feel like I'm getting old and boring. I need those experiences again.

I can imagine, yes. Crappy English? Well, practice makes perfect. People get better over time what ever it may be, so it makes sense.

But, when visiting the Colosseum did any of you randomly happen to carry a Colombian flag with you?

We were very self-conscious about showing we were colombians, we don't have the greatest reputation abroad to say the least. So probably it wasn't us, haha.

lol.. What got my attention was that you said four scooters. I noticed like three or four dudes seemingly in a happy mood waving a medium sized Colombian flag around taking some pictures. Quite implausible coincidence to be fair, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
