in all seriousness you should be able to budget 100-150 a night for a hotel room in paris and under 100 for most other towns. I don't have anywhere to recommend in France other than places you already know about, Marseilles is edgy and cool, Biarritz is more classy than the bling bling of other riviera locales, and the provence is obviously the king of French countryside but I also love the Loire valley region, basing yourself somewhere like Ambois. There's not much in the north unless you are interested in world war one and two history and battlefields (I am).

Give me your exact dates and I'll check hotel prices for you though it's too early to book of course if it's not til April.

Obviously renting a car is totally unnecessary for Paris and you can travel by train between all major cities and use public transport to get around them, but public transport is poor in the countryside and villages, so if you want to go around the provence or the Loire valley you will find it restricts you to the large towns and maybe restricts your time too, and a car could be a good idea- bike might also be great if you are both happy cyclists!

Why is 7 months too far away? It's certainly not price wise (especially if it falls over school holidays).

Only disadvantage is flexibility, but most decent hotel sites have good rates with free cancellation until a day or two prior now in any case. The super cheap non-refundable rates would be out for that far ahead now, but I can understand now knowing plans that far ahead.

I mean there's a slight chance prices will be better closer to the date if specials etc are released, but if you want somewhere specific and want to guarantee a decent rate, certainly nothing wrong with booking this far out.

Hotels frequently only offer the expensive 'card rate' if you book too far in advance and start offering the cheap price comparison websites closer to the time when they realise they're not going to fill the hotel otherwise.

Never heard it called Card Rate - maybe that's a British/European thing. We call it rack rate. Plenty of hotels offer their Advance Purchase rates (these range from 120+ days, 90+ days down to 14+ days) from the beginning - but it really depends on the hotels popularity.

Mercure Paris Centre Eiffel booking for a Wednesday in about 2 weeks is currently AUD350/night. Booking 2 months out is AUD260/night. Booking for a Wednesday 6 months out is currently AUD247/night.

I looked at dates in early October, early November and early March to avoid school holidays and peak seasons etc - so comparable dates, and all on Wednesday. And I chose Mercure as it's a big chain and in the city centre in Paris. The rates were from from Hotels Combined who are one of the bigger aggregators. (this was honestly the first hotel I looked at)

Of course it won't always be the case - and there will be last minute deals when a hotel doesn't fill its rooms. But most decent hotels that run at a reasonably occupancy if you want a decent rate - book in advance. Or at least start looking in advance. If there is somewhere in particular you're after, keep an eye out (from a long way out) for Sales etc from that chain.

Just like with airfares the rules are to guarantee a good rate: Book in advance. To risk a great race: Book late.

A lot of those price comparison website discount advance fairs require you to pay in full in advance, taking us back to the other problem you highlighted.

'Card rate' refers to the rates card you would be shown if you just showed up at the hotel.

You'll find nearly all advance purchase or sale rates require immediate payment - through a comparison website or not.

Standard rates don't, and most standard rates are available a long way out.

Oh and Sepak, when you get to Paris don't forget to visit Jim Morrison's grave. I've always thought of that but it never occured to me when I was at the spot.

Nady, I hope you'll respond to this. Since this is a serious question, you being a medical professional and all, which I highly respect.

I started taking dihydrocodeine for my leg pain, 120mg per day... First they even got me high, which I was not after.. Then the effect wore down luckily, and it only helped regarding the pain, you just don't feel it anymore. But then I went to work taking them everyday and probably hurt my feet while on them not feeling the pain, which is essentially the main worry that you should take it easy. Now they fucking hurt every day, and I'm out of them as well (painkillers).. I have to admit that I'm addicted to them at this point, and guess what? The withdrawals last for like weeks or even months.. I stupidly abused most of them whilst being drunk so I'm out, so in order "not to feel bad" I've been buying a pack of co-codamol a day, CWE'd it (paracetamol doesn't dissolve so much in cold water, while codeine does, so you filter it through, and you don't get liver damage).. And that's what's been keeping me okay. But it's not normal.. I've read so much about the painkiller addiction being a problem in the US, and there's barely any cure for it.

The next time I get my prescription I'm gonna take them reasonably, but still.. Not here, because I've got legit pain, but around the North-America area they prescribe those too easily, no? And they're so addictive... The problem is that how the hell am I gonna get rid of this since even two weeks on, the withdrawals have gotten even worse. That's based on previous experience. I'm silly, and made the same mistake again.

I'm just wondering what's your take on this?
