Regarding Messi & C.Ronaldo

I looked at Alex's list, but since it was locked I couldn't respond. Honestly, how did those two get any votes? 10 best of all time, and two players who have one good season get in the list? Why not put Drogba in, as well? Objectively, they haven't done nearly as much as any other player in that list. C.Ronaldo has won maybe up to 5 titles? Same with Messi. And really, they've only been playing world-class in the past 2/3 years, not even for Messi.

I agree that they are amongst the top players currently, but they by no means deserve to be in an all-time list, not now, anyway. C.Ronaldo has nearly as many votes as Romario, that's just laughable, IMO. Decade of playing; WC winning; 1,000 goal (allegedly) scoring legend vs. 1 great season and several nice dribbles/goals? Come on, now.

And that is the end of my rant.

Also No Batistuta, No Tostao, No Socrates, No Passarella, No Zamora, No Franchescoli, No Hugo Sanchez, No Klinsmann, No Raul, No Paolo Rossi ....I could go on and on.... to include C. Ronaldo (who IMO is really not even close to being a best all time player yet) and Messi (who might be a great one but needs to continue playing) and not those players and countless others is sacrilege

I'll defend my vote for Messi by saying I voted on probability of his becoming one of the world's greatest, not that he necessarily is now (since i'd include the forseeable future in "all time"). I knew there were probably better votes out there, but to be frank, I don't know much about many of the greats from the early 20th century besides names. As a devoted Man United fan, I've educated myself on their historical greats, a la Charlton and Best. However, I haven't been as diligent in knowing about, for example, Klinsmann, and I wasn't going to just vote for him when I have no idea what he did.
Does that make sense?
PS If anyone thinks its horrible that I don't know much about some of these players, I'm all ears. :)

actually you not knowing Jurgen Klinsmann, and voting for the 10 best players in football history doesnt make any sense to me..

I suppose the ones voted for c.ronaldo-messi are useless fanboys.. you could have said that for Ronaldo if this voting was occured in 1999-2000.. there`s a huge difference between a good player and a world class player and not everyone here seems to understand that..

The problem with polls like this is that people always think first of attacking players. My list reflected some defenders as well, such as Paolo Maldini and Bobby Moore.

It's obvious that these people who vote for these players have too little knowledge of Football's history to compose a list of players who have really achieved something. Shouldn't be bothered too much about it.

Thanks for your honesty farmboy, but know that as Theo said, ignorance does not excuse you, meaning, you really shoulndt vote if you dont know the historical greats.

I believe a more fair poll would be achieved if a few of the more knowledgeable guys here in SG get together and compile a list of over 100players, and they expose that to the community and then the top 10 could be considered the all time....I promise you, that in a top 50 list that I would compile, Messi, nor C. Ronaldo would be anywhere near.....they havent done anything in my eyes....

Take Messi for example, He was handpicked to lead Argentina to their first Copa America since 93, their first majors title since 93....but they flunked out in the final against Brazil, the "great" ones must lead their teams to glory, he didnt.

Actually it was Riquelme and he failed :(

He is a legend of Latin American Football, wether he was arrogant or not that's another issue, which he is, I dont deny that, but, he is by en large considered one of the all time great football players to come out of latin america...

Also, as far as Messi; I love the guy, I love watching barca just to watch him play, but I believe that yes along with Riquelme and Tevez it was expected that he would lift Argentina; of course they failed
