Road to the World Cup

I have had the pleaseure of playing all the FIFA series games at least once. Owning most! However I have no really played many since 2000.

My fav had to be FIFA Road to the World Cup 98.

As you all may remember in that game you could take your country from the very first qualifying rounds all the way to the World Cup final. In that case I liked to choose Canada, as that is where I am from.

So my question is, are there any games other than RTWC 98 that give the user that option? And furthermore, do any of the games that offer this option have Canada (I doubt as their world ranking has fallen off drastically over the past 5 years)?

I have noticed that in 2002, 2003 and 2004 there are not options for this type of game play.

Any info you could provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
TPA

No and until EA SPORTS do, I'm afraid RTWC will remain their best soccer game for 'lastability'.

I played it for months and months before tiring of it. Most new fifa's bore me within days.

I know what you mean too. Taking an under achieving Socceroo side (Australia) through qualifying through Oceania, then Aisan play off then the world cup gave a true sense of achievement.

RTWC ROCKED!!!!

That's what I am talking about

The term escaped me...

'lastability'

I agree. After RTWC 98, I played most all new FIFA games only to tire. The leagues are alright - but the ultimate is like you said. Taking a team from the humble beginnings all the way to the show...

Ahhh, those were good times.

Yes indeed... they don't make em like they used to.. RTWC was one of the best editions of FIFA yet.. like you, I've had the pleasure of playing every single FIFA series game.. :)

I also love their World Cup 98 (the mid-season release)- I thought the gameplay was slightly improved, compared to RTWC.

There was one thing that kinda annoyed me about RTWC though. When you took the qualification route, there would usually be a lot of upsets, right down to the world cup final, where i would sometimes face a team that in reality hasn't even made a world cup appearance yet. But for everything else that EA Sports brought to that game, that was all to easily forgiveable! :) I played that game over and over and over again, never quite tiring of it.

And was it 2000, when they had those classic sides, the AC Milan of the 80s, Maradona's Napoli, etc? that was good.. and so were the classic world cup finals in World Cup 98. Oh, to be able to take Johann Cruyff's men into batter against Beckenbaur and win the 1974 title that was rightfully theirs... :hump: Sadly, they didn't have the 1986 final though. That was another classic in my opinion.

I hope EA Sports brings back some of that old stuff in a classics re-release, making them all compatible with windows XP. I would buy it! :)

My RTWC 98 is working in XP

I had to do some tinkering of course, but still play it from time to time.

I also agree with the upsets, but that never bothered me too much. The classics were a great idea as well - yet another great idea that has disappeared from this one time great game.

It seems EA has decided to spend the cash on graphics since 2000 rather than making the games more fun. Sure it's important that the games look good... but if it doesn't make me want to stay and play again - what is the point?

I just played WE7 (and will try ISS and PES) for the first time this week (all PC versions). WE7 is great, much more fun than EA '03 or '04.

Of course I would take all the functionality of RTWC and plop it in FIFA 2004... that would be fine by me!

Now there is an idea... WE7 with that functionality would have to be one of the greated sports titles of all time.

Know anyone at Konami we can talk to?

If I remember correctly you have too much RAM... Do a search and you will find out how to solve the problem in this forum.

Yep too much memory (ram + virtual memory).

Try disabling or minimising your swap file from:
Control Panel, System, Hardware Something (Sorry),Performance, the bottom one what ever that is. Click disable.

(I'm on a Win98 system at the moment so I'm going of memory, sorry.

(You've got a GIG of ram so it will be fine to play the game. Re-enable it when your finished playing and everything will be fine)

If your still having troubles understanding the steps I'll write up the exact instructions if you like.

I EA were smart, Fifa 2006 would be just like the 98 game. Imagine how popular it would be. Being able to take your country to the World Cup, epspecially with the great graphics, and hopefully much improved gameplay. EA must do this for 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well imagine taking control of a national team and controlling it through the WC quals and then the cup and after that you would have the EC quals and the Euroo championship... A continuos national team mode that never ended...

RTWC I remember it as well this game introduced me to the fifa series.
Man what a game it was it surely rocked an absolute classssssssssssic. I played and replayed it for ages. Also its music was the best ever i cannt forget it too good.

Then i switched over to FIFA 99 i think fifa99 was more exciting in gameplay, the players were good looking, gameplay was fast and everything about the game was too good.

Nowadays i play fifa2k its very good the colours are beautiful the stadiums are good just perfect man !!! I am never bored of it. The classics of fifa2k re very good i ve added AC Milan 02-03, squad which won the CL to it as well. FORZA MILAN !!! :p:p

But Nowadays FIFA series are made to look good only nothing much in it, they just work to make it more realistic and the charm of a computer game seems to be losing.:(

But has to be said EA worked really hard on RTWC there was a comprehensive list of reserves as well for teams in it. Around the 2002 WC i even found Oliver Khan in the reserve list, wow! RTWC 98 also had veery exciting comentary. Ea added player audios to many players but for some strange reasons they dropped it in future games, like in RTWC there was audio for scholes, neville but in FIFA2k there isnt its such a pity.

This brings me to a question now, if anybody knows how to convert the player audios from RTWC (which i think probably are in *.pbk files ,P00405.PBK for instance) to wav format (i think its done using sndview but i dont know how) i ll be really greatful i ll then use these WAV files and add audio for fifa2k players. Someone released a patch for some player audios converted from RTWC to fifa2k also but i couldnt contact the guy.

Plsss tell if someone knows how to do it.

The only way I know to "convert" the pbk files are to play a match and record the sounds of the match using some software or a mic connected to your computer. Then you have to look through the recorded wav file and find the separate sounds you are looking for and save them as single wav-files. Last, convert them to whatever format you need and import them to your newer game.

A great game

I installed it a few days ago.

Ahh the memories keep flooding back...

- The AI controlling your substituions
- The billions of goals scored in stoppage time.
- The easy goals coming from difficult angles by attacking on the wing!

RTWC 98 is good game but not better than FIFA 99.

In FIFA 99 Gameplay is excellent. But in RTWC 98 Gameplay is not very good.
