Running in the morning (Fitness)

(First things first, i'm just gonna delete stupid posts because i can't be arsed with them in every single thread, this is a question which might lead to discussion, not jokes. Oh yeah, try a paedo joke and i'll yellow card you here and now, you have been warned.)

Anyway, i'm just wondering if any of you guys run in the morning to stay fit or get fit? My bro did it a few times... then stopped, but it seems like a pretty good idea. Anyone know much about it? Likkee, how long i could run for, how early is early and how early is too early? :D

Oh, and will it get me fitter, cos at the minute i'm not exactly at peak condition. All thoughts welcome.

I run frequently, but mostly in the afternoon. I would recommend it. If you do it regulary, you can improve pretty fast, and then it get's interesting, when you start improving.

At the start I was only able to run for like 20 minutes, now I run 4/5 times a week, in the weekends I often run 2.5 hours, covering a distance of about 33km, about 13km an hour, so that's a decent speed My goal is being able to run a marathon though

Don't start without good shoes and a mp3 player/ipod though

Yeah, at the minute i'm really rather unfit, more than 10mins and i'd be struggling :D Got some decent trainers and an mp3 player. Well that's the thing i'm not sure i can be arsed to run in the afternoon cos im often doing things. I thought in the morning might wake me up and actually make me a bit more pro-active.

Works well in theory.....

I tried it once. Woke up at 6 every morning for a week, went for a run. It was pretty fun, but it sucks up your energy completely, so I stopped. I liked running at 6 am, though, perfect weather, it was pretty nice, but this is Spain, and it might be too cold to do that in England.

I think night-time runs are the best. It's not too hot, and if you have the time for it, it's perfect. You run, you shower, do your nighttime business and go to sleep. My dad and bro used to do it to get in shape, but they stopped having the time for it.

In my honest opinion though, best way to get in shape would be swimming/cycling, and more entertaining, IMO. You'll get bored very quickly if you run alone, so get someone to run with you, because even running with music is a bore.

EDIT: Give running in the morning a try, but I think you'll find yourself waking up and just going back to sleep.

exactly what I had :p

Why I run in the afternoons:

After I come home from school (well, starting this year it's university) I often feel like exercising, sitting behind a desk whole day makes me uncomfortable.

So I come home, and start running at about 4/4.30 pm. I run for 1.5 hours or so, and when I get home I shower, and have dinner. That's my main reason why I run in the afternoon. If I exercise and don't have dinner afterwards, I start eating all kinds of sandwiches and snacks.

I ran in the afternoons for like, two-three months. But it was more cardio than actual running. I'd do it for 20-25 minutes. It wasn't bad, but I just hated waking up, eating breakfast, then waiting for the food to digest to go run. Then after, I'd be sweating, and I'd have to shower. Which I guess wasn't bad, but I got in the habit of bathing at nights before going to sleep. So it meant I had to shower twice or live with the nasty ass dried up sweat the rest of the day. I basically got too lazy and stopped.

I tell myself every day that I'll exercise in the afternoon, but I don't, for any excuse. I think starting is hard, but once you start, it becomes routine and is easy. I used to go the gym but stopped, and now I haven't excercised in 2 years.

Running in the morning starts your metabolism going fast for the rest of the day, it is the best time to run if you want to burn fat. You should also eat after you run, so it's not a lump in your stomach. Get up, put on your nikes and go. When you get back you can shower and eat a granola bar or whatever.

what Shifty said. I promised myself I would go for a run every day off I get, and I did for the first 6 or 7 days I was off of work, but then stopped. I got into really good shape too, went for about 30 minutes by the end of it without ever hitting the wall. after that I'd just play soccer instead of run or drink or something... (H)

I heard that early morning running is not very good for your health, because it puts too much work on your body. So the afternoon runs are probably the best ones, though I think running gets annoying after some time..

A shot of Stoli and a Bloody Mary perks me right up for the day...

But seriously, I'm not that bad ass...

I like more doing some cycling, especially on Sunday, when the avenues of my city were available for doing some good 20 km! Also, playing a good 5-on-5 match in the middle of the week with your mates at the university do some good.

Tom...I just joined a gym because I was tired of being out of shape and huffing and puffing after 15 minutes of physical activity.

I think if you can get into it, running is a great activity, but it can be hard on the knees and feet, so you might think about mixing it up with other stuff.

Also, don't go totally empty, but try to have some juice or something before you go so you have at least some sugar in you. (natural juice, not crap)

Remember that you need to warm down and stretch after you run or you're just asking for back problems as your hamstrings will get tighter and tighter (I speak from experience)

Anyway, I've got my first appointment tomorrow with a trainer who is helping me design a program, so I'll let you know how that goes. (H)

No that's wrong, it keeps your metabolism up for the rest of the day and anyone who is serious about keeping off fat (body builders basically) does their cardio during the morning when they wake up.

Like Carlos said, don't go empty, drink water. In fact, you're supposed to drink an ounce of water (preferably ice water) for every pound you weigh, every day.

It's not hard to keep up in the summer, but when you see the snow/rain pouring down your window it doesn't exactly get you in the mood to do some training.

I train weekly by bike BTW. Usually I ride about 50 km(sometimes more when I feel like it, sometimes less when I don't feel like it).

If you have time to run in the morning, or can adjust to waking up reall really early, you should try. Think about how long you'd like to run, how many blocks (if you live in the centrum) or something like that. You should be able to run atleast 30minutes straight right now, I'm guessing, after running that a couple mornings, you might be able to run for one hour.

I wouldn't probably do that every day, 2 or 3 a week, because that would make you too exhausted and your muscles would ache pretty much all the time. You'll have to stretch quick before you go running, and 30 secs - 1 min/per muscle after the run, and you shouldn't be feeling too tight the next day.

About the getting fitter part. It's a sure thing - if you don't start eating a lot more or more energyfilled food, you'll lose some weight, grow your msucles, and generally get in fitter shape, so if you're up for taking 1-1,5 hours from your morning to that, you should do it, you'd feel very good after those runs.

Good luck to you in this, and if you decide to start this, please post some of your progress here (how much faster you run the same trip later on, losed weight, or anything like that)

PS: You should probably also try doing some push-ups, sit-ups and that sort of things after the run, before hitting the shower, it will make the effect much bigger.

Hope this helped.
