From what i read on wikipedia, the tradition states the Sinterklaas' little helpers were actually Moors, and the black colour in which they're painted today is meant to represent how they looked after jumping down soot-filled chimneys in order to deliver presents. That seems to have nothing to do with the natural black skin colour at all then.

That's an excuse they made up later. A chimney doesn't get them textured ''black'' hair, big red lips, crooked language and golden earrings. It's obviously the colonial stereotype of Africans. And it's pretty incredible that blackface can be acceptable.
