Stand up - or sit down?

Having a discussion with Dubcrazy in the "Hillsborough" thread about terracing and the effect it has on football as both an experience and the atmosphere of the ground as a whole.

I mentioned that the Old Trafford Stretford End's once deafening roar has been lost since it was converted so I wanted to ask the question:

Do you prefer to watch football standing, or sitting - and do you feel the atmosphere of the English grounds has suffered since the conversion to all seater stadia.

Could terracing ever return to top flight English football? And how could lessons be learned from the events of 15/4/89.

I prefer standing while my team's attacking and cheering for them, and sit down and watch while the opposing team's attacking. haha. I guess its different for others. And yeah the atmosphere's definitely way better while standing obviously.

But IMO security comes first. If something has proved to have caused tragedies in the past, its best to avoid it. I know that the main cause was due to police incompetence, but it could happen again.

But surely with the correct steps, it could be implemented safely - plus we don't need those steel anti-hooligan fences anymore either.

I agree, of course safety and security should take precidence, but other countries still have safe standing areas.

Standing. Always.

We have a standing area at our stadium and theres never been any problems with it (that i know of)

Not the way it used to be.

But the Germans seem to have found a great "middle ground" in their stadiums.

Terraces are better in my opinion. I have watched football standing and "sitting" well... I didn't actually use the seat, like most of the people around me.

Seats are great for children and older people though.

Yeah, from my experience watching other sports live (only european footie game i've ever been to was a Charlton Athletic charity testimonial ) is that people tend to stand when they're really into the game, so terraces would be better for atmosphere, but personally it's really nice to be able to sit down if there's a lull in the action - standing in the same place for almost 2 hours can wear you out.

I watched soccer standing once. It was sickkkk. You need to look down to the TV tho so it hurt my neck a bit.

I prefer lying down in my bed while watching footie on TV.

On the serious sid of things, I prefer seating. I stand up when my team is really attacking and scoring goals.

My leg is weak so I cannot stand for a long time so I prefer to sit if I go to stadium or watching TV at home.
Sometimes I lay down when I watch matches on home(but mostly sit on couch)and eat snacks during the time. Also if our team scores and then stand up.

Exactly. I also stand while I'm provoking the players of the opposite team and throwing insults to the referee when he fails at his job.

:D

I like standing, but the choice of being able to sit is also good. The atmosphere is always much better when you're standing. It's because you're usually doing it for a worthwhile reason. ;)

The discussion was about watching it in the stadium not in the sofa in front of the TV :D .

Guys, I love the comedy but can we PLEASE get back on topic?

What ideas do you think would help standing at football be reintroduced safely?
