somewhat related to Canadian Soccer:

"Rangers have confirmed a nine-day pre-season tour of Canada where they will play Dinamo Zagreb in a friendly.

The Light Blues will be based in Toronto from July 4 and will line up against the Croatian side on July 12 at the Rogers Centre - formerly the SkyDome - in the Canadian city.

The Ibrox club have also lined up a friendly against local opposition on July 9.

Rangers have already confirmed friendlies against Linfield in Belfast on July 16 and at Ipswich three days later.

Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach will arrive at Ibrox on July 23."

i think we can get a large number of people at the game. Toronto has a large population of Scots and Croatians(well any country for that matter). I cant wait :lui:

Great idea shinji. Its about time we had our thread, considering a good % of regulars at SG live in the great white north.

I heard about the De Guzman deal a few months ago, good to see it follow through (Y). Iain Hume should really be moving up by now, hes good enough to be a starter in english championship or bench player at lower EPL side. I thought his performances in FA Cup this season would garner interest, oh well.

Ill go to the Rangers game if the tickets are less than $20, decent seats and Rangers bring full team. And even so, ill probably have a tough time convincincing any of my friends to come.

...

Mark that article showed how much of a joke that writer is. Everyone was fully satisfied with the game, and we all knew what we were getting when we paid for the tickets. Of course, being a biased Canadian douchebag, he had to mention hockey, and the lockout at least once in his article.ht hi

One of the players on the Canadian U20 team plays for the Rangers youth team. I think he's the third string GK in the U20 team in Holland.

Goddam I hate those stupid biased pure Canadian douchebags like the guy on Prime Time Sports or whatever the gay radio show is called. It's people like this in the higher levels that prevent Canadian soccer from developing. And the collapse of the York Stadium deal just added a huge dent to Canadian soccer. I was so pumped to go watch some games there possibly for WYC 2007 until those Rogers fools... grrr...

Oh well, at least they're showing Confederation Cup.

Even worse than the radio guys who've always talked sh!t about soccer, are the one's who actually have a say in the future of Canadian soccer. The CSA couldn't make a right decision to save their lives. Personally I think as long as they hold on to this fantasy that we won't go anywhere until we get a national league, then we're cooked. It's been proven that a pro soccer league can't survive in Canada unless it consists of only 3 teams in T.O, Vancouver, and Montreal  They really need to just focus their energy on getting these cities teams in MLS, make some rule where there can only be 3 non-Canadians on the roster or something, then go from there. They could even create farm teams in semi-pro leagues so young guys can aspire to make it to the main squads one day.

...and no more Onstad in goal. He blows.

Who is the backup, i'd admit ever since onstad's first season in the MLS he hasn't played that well. I hope Rochester plays San Jose in the Open Cup, i've missed that guy, he was th best goalie in Rhinos history, he lead us to the Open Cup champions 99!

I think the CSA wants a MLS team in Toronto rather than a Canadian league because they know it's not economically feasible to have a league. It's the western Voyageurs who keep complaining how an MLS team in Toronto would ruin soccer in Canada and how there should be a league even though there's no money to support one. The west just hates on Toronto.

And there aren't really any good GKs after Craig Forrest left. Onstad is old and Hirschfeld hasn't played regularly in like 3 years. There's Sutton, but he looked shaky in the N. Ireland game. I just hope guys like Rob Giacomi and Asmir Bergovic(Portsmouth) can step in once they're old enough.

Do they have a foreign coach for their international team also?

Hey,
the USA Under-20 NT has Siggi Schimd a german born coach, and i would love to see them kick around turkey in the Youth Championships this summer, if any of you watch any of the games you can see the talent in the US and how much better the US has become. They beat Argentina the other day and they had won i think 3 of the last 4 youth championships or something like that.

Sutton, lol, the only reason he is even decent is because he is so f****ing tall. He robbed us last year in the playoffs, pulling a carrol blunder.

Hey.. a Voyageur~! I think you're over-simplifying the problem with a MLS team in Toronto. It's not that the West just hates Toronto.. it's that Toronto is always so quick to say "screw the rest of Canada... we're the only important city". I've said it a million times before, but having 1 MLS team in Toronto will do Carlos ALL for soccer development in Canada and ONLY benefit the fans in Toronto. It will also kill any chance of re-establishing any kind of Canadian league. Even 3 Canadian teams in the MLS don't interest me... how long do you think it'll be before the MLS would expand to Edmonton? Calgary? etc..

You probably buy all the Rogers hype that the Blue Jays or Raptor's are "Canada's Teams"... what have they done for Baseball Canada or Basketball Canada?

I sat my ass down at every single Edmonton Aviators game last year.. and I'd do it again.

Oh yeah.. and if you think our Canadian lads "suck too much" to get your support then why don't you just pack your bags and piss off back to whatever country you're "from". 'Cause we don't need you.

Ahh... nice to be back. :D

When did I say that our Canadian lads suck?

Having an MLS team in Toronto can help with development in soccer because Toronto is such a multicultural city and if these kids can have a professional team then they don't just have to cheer for the AC Milans, etc. but they can also look at the Toronto team and dream of playing for them.

A lot of kids play soccer but don't have the oppurtunity to play professionally. Just look at some of the guys on the U20 team who are playing in the NCAA and haven't even decided to play professionally or not. An MLS team would provide extra spots for players that aren't there right now.

And if you honestly think that we can financially support an all Canadian league then you must be dreaming. We couldn't even keep two Canadian NHL teams and hockey is our national sport.

3 MLS teams can do wonders for the sport and I know that Montreal and Vancouver support soccer so having teams their would boost soccer popularity even more.

Ok... first off I didn't mean to say that "you" said our lads suck... I know it looked that way, but I was really just reacting to others in this thread.

In a lot of ways, you make my point for me. First off by saying that that we need an MLS team in Toronto, then by saying we can't even support 2 hockey teams. The very REASON those hockey teams can't be supported is that they're tied to an American league. We're stuck with a hockey league that pays players in $US and is at the whim of huge owners with deep pockets in giant US markets - and as you pointed out.. that's the biggest sport in Canada.

Now you want to go and do that to us with soccer as well. You probably don't care if the rest of Canada gets teams or not. The "big 3" is good enough for you, because those of us who live in the rest of Canada can just damn well cheer for Toronto as "Canada's team". Well I say screw that. I want to cheer for Edmonton.

By putting an MLS team in Toronto, you kill us EVER having the chance of having a Canadian league, you'll tie us to the Americans like a stone around our necks. An MLS team in Toronto would give Canada a two tiered soccer league, and kill any chance of a toronto team participating in any real way in a Canadian league. Toronto has shown it'll only support "the big time" - which is why the CFL has such a problem with the Argos and the persistent NFL Toronto rumours.

Vancouver and Montreal have shown that they can and will support a league that's grown gradually, over time. Toronto hasn't. I was SO disappointed when the Aviators and the Mustangs folded last year, but that's largely because they tried to do too much way too soon. A Canadian league CAN be supported, but people have to realize we're not gonna get Serie A.

Have you ever gone to a Lynx match?

Where are you going to get the money and TV coverage for this Canadian soccer league? The fact is we HAVE to be tied to an American league because that's the only way to bring in the money. And I don't think a Canadian MLS team will be paying players in American money.

And I don't give a crap about Edmonton, I care about CANADA. I want to see the Canadian national team do well and that mean's by having a professional team that kids can dream to play for. A Canadian league will most likely fail miserably and that would kill off any interest in Canadian soccer. And where are you going to get the players to fill up your Canadian league? Do you honestly believe that a Canadian league can provide players a healthy income to live on? Even A-league teams have trouble doing that.

And I don't go to Lynx games because I don't want to take a 1hr. bus ride up to Etobicoke.
