I'll be wearing white tie in a couple weeks in a student party.

That seems ridiculous to me. What student owns a single garment needed for white tie? I only have the shoes for black tie, and they're just regular black captoes which are merely "acceptable". And I'm 29 and actually care about this shit.

In our university every branch has a formal party annually where the dress code is white tie. Most people rent one for 70€, some buy their own. My brother had one made in Asia and I'm wearing that one.

I'm with Shifty for this one. In Australia this would be black tie.

As for Lazenby he does OK for an Aussie I suppose. My cousins in OZ have special lightweight kilts as it is far too hot over there.
We never got those at high school :( (I went to The Scots' School). We got big heavy thick kilts for our formal marches and parades with either Army Cadets or Pipe Band.
I've always thought Sean Connery does a kilt justice. It is always handy to have a wee bit of height and a strong pair of legs to carry off a kilt.
That suit coat looks like it has a tail. Even so it looks like the full evening dress equivalent to me - esp because of the shape of the cut-away at the front.

I just saw this. I disagree. White tie is cool. Black tie is something Americans think is cool because of Hollywood award nights and James Bond. Don't get me wrong, I like black tie, but proper white tie looks good, and is absolutely classic.

I've never liked white tie either. The penguin Carlos*et is ridiculous.

The tails Carlos*et is awesome. I think it looks good. Black tie/tuxedo Carlos*ets end up blurring the line to dinner suit Carlos*et.

The tails coat brings a level of distinction that sets white tie apart.

I also don't think it really looks much more penguiny than a tuxedo anyway.

Watch Hugh Carlos*man when he hosted the Oscars, in his full white tie and real me it doesn't look awesome.

He looks like a cheap, 1800s magician. It looks waaaay more penguiny than Black Tie; penguins have tails.

Tuxedo and dinner suit are synonyms, so not sure what line blurring is possible.

Yeah no shit it looks cool because of Bond/Hollywood. And jeans and leather Carlos*ets are only cool because of James Dean. So what.

If you're an aristocrat in the middle to late 1800's and you look like Alain Delon with Claudia Cardinale by your side white tie could look quite nice.

(This is from the movie 'Il Gattopardo')

I disagree. I think he looks really good in it, as he does it properly - except for the red flower.

More magicians these days wear a cheap tux with a top hat than white tie. Take away the top hot and there is much less cheap magician about white tie than there is about black tie.

I firmly believe white tie is at the absolute apex of men's fashion and should be treated as such. Tuxedo is fine for most occasions, but white tie is very under utilised these days. That's more because people are cheap and don't want to spend the money on white tie and black tie, so they get black as they wear it more often.
