The definition of a true fan

There has been some discussion regarding who is a fan or not lately, and it has inspired me to write a little piece on what I think represents the true fan.

I have been questioned by people I know on what kind of fan I am because I don’t know all that much about the two clubs I love. E.g. I can’t name the past five managers that Juve has had. I can’t even mention the 5 biggest players for Juve of all time. “How can you call your self a fan and not knowing that?” people say.

Also, because of my global position it’s very hard for me to ever travel and actually watch the games. I have done this once, I travelled to Barcelona to watch a game, and it costed me €500. So, since I’m a student, I can’t afford to spend half of my monthly stipends on stuff like this.

I know there are Norwegians that travels many, many times a year to watch the team they love, and they defy them selves as true fans. Because, (come on?), they travel thousands of miles to watch the games.

And yeah, it’s great that someone knows everything about their club, they travel whenever possible and spends loads of money to watch their teams play. But that, IMO, does not make tehm any more a fan then someone who doesn’t.

When I hear the word true fan, I think that is something deeper then that. A true fan (IMO) is someone who got their club(s) deep into the very root of their heart. He who, if only once a year, goes to a game and scream his heart out to make sure his team performs as good as they can. And when they score it’s like he almost want’s to cry. He who shares his fellow fans tears if the where to loose and go out of a tournament. He who if his team were to win the league or the champions league, UEFA cup or the FA Cup shares the tears of joy with the thousands of people sharing the same experience.
If the team is about to be relegated, and he stands up applauding and telling the guys he love not to feel to down, we will always be here right by your side.
The true fan is defied by what’s in his or hers heart. The true fan is someone who would do anything for his club regardless of what happens.

And in this case I would like to bring out the Liverpool fans that where present at the CL final last season where LFC where down by three goals against one of the best defensive teams in the world. The task seemed impossible, yet they sang so the stadium was shaking and I belive, and probably even shed tears when they heard them selves sing. I know I would if I was a LFC fan.

I might be way off, but this is how I would defy a true fan. And I defie my self as a true fan, even if it is for two clubs.

I dont see how screaming and crying make you a true fan. I consider myself a true fan of both PSV and MVV, but when Im in the stadium or watching at home I never scream, I just sit calmly. From the inside im not always calm though (H)

Because screaming and crying shows true passion.

I have one thing i want to say about your little speech there: AMEN! :D
I must say i feel the same way about my favourite team, aside Rosenborg BK of course! :D i have been in Liverpool once, but that does not make me a true fan.
I want to refer to this part of your speech, espeacially the last sentence:

I'm a LFC fan, i had tears in my eyes when I heard the LFC supporters singing, when Dudek saved the penalty and when Gerrard raised the CL trophy over his head!

So, I must say that I'm very agree with your definition of a true fan! :)

PS. Sorry for the typos! My english sucks just as much as MUFC! :D

i agree with Cody on this one. I consider myself a true fan of Manchester United but i dont NEED to scream and cry on the outside to show my passion for the club. I show my passion for the club by supporting them whatever the situation, including financially with buying official merchandise etc. and being eternally optimistic with what we can achieve and hating every team we play. Thats what i class as a true fan, a commited fan.

Just because someone screams their lungs out doesn't mean they're a "true" fan

First off, stop taking the forum so seriously. In the end it's only one person that knows whether you're a true fan - yourself. Don't let other people decide.

I consider myself a true fan of Sporting Lisbon...I may not cry every goal...but I live the game with passion. When we play bad, I shout in front of the TV, if we play good I applause...if the referee makes a bad decision I yell a lot...

And the true fan is that one that can't escape to those emotional moments...I will not forget that last goal in AZ Alkmaar stadium, in the last chance...we got to the Final of the Uefa (but we lost...). That goal of Miguel Garcia...I wanted to shout goal...but I couldn't, I just showed tears...

And the true fan must believe until the end. :P

Rubbish. Absolute Rubbish. Ever heard of the saying "True power moves silent"?

Just because people aren't screaming at everything doesn't mean that they don't care. I know loads of people who chout all the time during a game but they don't bother showing up to games untill its interesting... ala the CL Semis. A true fan should watch every match possible no matter how they watch.

The last is true, I watch every game if possible, but I can't take a plane to italy or spain once a week.

But the screaming part. By screaming I don't mean pointlessly yelling, but it's singing and reactiong when something happens on the pitch that you disagree on. What would football be if people didn't do that? Nothing shows passion like doing that, during a footballgame that is.
What made football to be what it is to day is the fans showing their passion like that. At least that's what I think.

However, if showing passion for say e.g. art, you don't need to sing songs with 10 of your mates running around the artgallery.

Isn't a forum a place where you are supposed to state your opinions?

True fans are those who will follow their team through thick and thin around the darkest corners of the country on a freezing cold tuesday night.

Lower league club fans basically becuase you dont get the 'prawn sandwich brigade'.

for me being a true fan is supporting your club, as previously said, through thick and thin. from the edges of relegation, to the brink of glory. from the bad to the worse. and in the time of success, you revel in it.

i have friends who cry during the world cup when italy exit while others just sit there. in my mind they are true fans, they just have different ways they express themselves.

and what was said about not knowing coaches or great players, i dont agree with that. one of my best friends, who shares his love of the minnesota vikings with me, doesnt know all the players or past coaches but his love for the team is undeniable.

of course the definition changes from person to person, as it should. not all people are boistrous or emotional. some are calm and composed but all that matters is that the love and passion is there.

true fans do not pick their team, they are chosen!!!

Exactly. It's so convenient to say 'hmm...who's on top of the table recently...Chelsea? Barcelona? Juventus? Ok Ill cheer for one of those and become a super fan!' Thats not right, because you have based your choice on results, rather than researching the history of the club and finding what the club represents geographically, politically, emotionally, etc.

When I see guys from Israel, Singapore, etc. say they are hardcore fanatics of teams who frequently win it makes me sick. You can do what you want, im not going to tell you who to cheer for and not to cheer for. but dont call yourself a die hard fanatic. It's people like you who real fans dread having on the same side as them because you give the fanbase a bad name. Im sure there are true Juventus, Madrid, Man U, etc fans who have it in their blood, their tradition to cheer for them and thats fine. But it must make them sick to be labelled glory hunters because the majority of their fellow fans are just that.

i don't give a **** what other people think of me as a true fan or not, because there has only been one club for me (united) since my interest for fotball started in the 80's
it could be the fact that the only fotball we could se on tv was english fotball, the case could have been differen if we could see fotball from other nation's,but since the only teams i knew was english my interest fell on United, and still is!
the strange thing is that the interest just grow's the older i get!
i am not the hardcore supporter that need's to have the United logo on everyting i own but still i consider my self to be the "true fan "
