As it happened I didn't even really understand what was going on! But...

Looks like a goal to me.

hmm, still doesn't look like the whole ball crossed the line to me ...

and that's ignoring the foul preceding the "goal" ...

Yeah, after further super sophisticated analysis, it looks like the whole ball didn't really cross the line but still... it's really really close.

That's not how paralax erorr works. The ball is halfway on the line

Just unbelievable decision, honestly on the strength of the last 10 days there needs to be a full scale review of refereeing in England and the introduction of goal line technology at the end of the season.

Goal line technology wouldn't have helped with that second goal, the ball wasn't even close enough to the line to trigger it.

hah, was reminded of this when reading Krioukov's paper, scribed to contest a traffic ticket:

http://arxiv.org/pdf/1204.0162v1.pdf

you can kinda see how it implies that it'll theoretically take the incorporation of technology, not better (or additional) linesmen, to get goal line decisions right ...

Yep. When they first teach assistant referees they say no matter what you wont be able to judge it perfectly, your face, chest hips and feet both need to be square with the line just in order to see straight and the whole keeping one eye on the play as well even if positioned perfectly it's not 100%

Kinda? This has been obvious for like 25 years. The fact that FIFA and all the FAs won't actually implement it is a disgrace. The microchip is great, but hell, just an elevated camera on the goal lines that a 4th official watches from a box is sufficient.

Their main issue is that it would interrupt the flow of the game, but i'm sure if they held a poll asking fans players and staff whether they are ok with a slight delay to correct a crucial decision the response would be overwhelming

I don't really think so. When the ball crosses there's a buzz on the ref's belt and he awards a goal. Otherwise play on.

I read somewhere that the FA want goal line technology. it's all FIFA that's holding it all back.

FIFA? as in, Blatter? i think you mean UEFA, as in Platini ... coz FIFA will be testing tech this summer, in preparation for projected implementation at Brazil 2014 (though Brazil 2013 would make more sense, IMO) ...

Help?

Why not just make it like in NHL, if the ball crosses the line the red lights inside the net come on. It doesn't have to be the most advanced thing a human created, just something that does the trick.

The only reason I didn't mention this specifically is because I wasn't sure if there's a chip in the hockey puck. If that's how they do it in Hockey, then it's obviously the way to go.
