The group mentality on SG

I am, and not afraid to say it, a noob when it comes to SG. The 25th of November this year I will have been member for one year. Considered with many of the “regular faces” on SG, that’s a short time. Now, I know that entering a group that has known each other for quite some time, is not easy. There are hundreds of examples on this matter, e.g. highschool gropus, a new work environment, the army etc, and usually it will take you some time before you are accepted as one of the group. But I didn’t know it would take more then a year. The past months or so I’ve been trying to post regularly and joining in on keeping the forum alive, and I feel that I have done a good job. However, there is someone that feels the opposite.
A couple of days ago, I sent a PM to one of the admins, telling him about a suggestion I had regarding the querry forum. My idea was to make a thread where people who are new at this, like me, could ask questions that didn’t need an own thread, cause then we wouldn’t get **** from the other “older” members on making ‘useless threads’. That meant short questions which needed only one answer (e.g. who’s the head admin?). The admin told me that in one way it was a good idea, but he feared if he made one, it would kill the forum. And that’s fair enough. The thing that impressed me, and yes, it actually impressed me, was that he bothered to answer me. I’ve PM some other mods on earlier occasions, but never received any answers from them.
So, since a thread like that wouldn’t be made, I asked my questions in one thread, and I took about 5 posts before I was told my threads are useless, and that I wasn’t a very smart guy. And this was not the first time I was exposed to the SG group mentality. Many times during my first year, have I seen this. And not only me, I have seen a lot of guys who haven’t been members for a long time, taking a lot of crap from the older members. The phenomenon here is that is not the really experienced guys who do this. They are actually quite nice. It’s the guys that is between the noobs and the (do I dare call it) the elite.
Why they feel so strongly about their group, and don’t want to accept anyone new in, I don’t know. Maybe they are trying to prove their worth to the admins, maybe they are trying to impress eachother, I couldn’t tell, because I’m no psychologist.
Luckily this isn’t the case all over the forum. There is one place where I, as a noob, am actually being treated as one of the guys, and that is in the Juventus team thread. I would like to use this opportunity to thank the guys in the Juventus team thread to actually accept me and I genuinely feel I’m a part of that group. Thank you.
I really hope that this do change one day, cause if the hostility towards the noobs continue, the forum will never grow (IMO). And I’m sure there will be a lot of guys that will laugh and give me **** for making this article, but that’s ok. I’m not afraid to be my self, and I will continue to be my self regardless of what people say to me. And maybe when I reach my post #10,000 after my fifth year I too will be accepted as a member of SG.

Great post.

There are tons of retards on this forum, tons of retarded cliques and tons of normal people who treat a forum like it should: a place to discuss something now and then.

My advice is to just don't be bothered with the majority of the members. Remember, it's only an internet forum, you're not going to make friends for life. Just remain independant, it's much more fun that way. Post in the threads you like, the Juve thread, the guitar thread, whatever and don't be bothered with retards who seem to lack a social life in the real world.

Bah - I've been here several years, have nearly 10'000 posts and take more sh!t than almost all the new members put together :D

I see where you're coming from, chappy, but if being 'accepted into the SG elite' means so much to you, I would question the integrity of your reasons for being here.

I think you shouldn't get upset about how you are "treated" on an internet forum. I mean, it's a damn forum.

Just because they're admin doesn't mean they have to post 24 7. I know that Lior does alot of work with sg now that he kinda looks after it since matt went to EA, but he just doesn't post much.

Okay, (1) I didn't try to insult them by not posting nor did I try to make them look bad, it was just a question. (2) every admin with more then 3 blue balls i've seen got like 10,000 posts or so, so I was just curious why those guys didn't, ok?

This has you so upset? He answers your question and you come back being a dick. There's a two part answer to your irrelevant question (by the way why don't you just PM one of those members?)... 1) The posting frequency didn't really pick up until maybe late 2002 permanently. 2) To be an admin you don't need to post. At all.

Why do the elite refuse to accept someone like you? Because you make dumb comments and dumb posts (like this one). But what does your "elite" category even mean? I personally for the most part don't talk to anyone on AIM and don't have MSN; it's not like we're in cohoots to make fun of you. The truth is that people who have been here for awhile aren't afraid to call someone stupid if they say something stupid. And honestly, that's all there is to it. But it doesn't extend to just "noobs", it extends to everyone. There have been a lot of fights and feuds between people who have been here for 4-5 years in the past. And by the way, the length of time someone's been here (ditto for amount of posts) has little to do with whether or not someone is accepted. It's the quality and relevance of posts.

And of course the Juventus fans accepted you, you're a Juventus fan. If someone supports your team, who cares about anything else? Especially in a thread that talks exclusively about that team. I doubt you'd find the same feeling of acceptedness in any other team forum as a Juve fan.

Help?

ShiftyPowers totally right.

if you are trying to tell others to just be themselves, then why do you take time to post so much about the so-called elite group.

I have been here for almost 5 years, only have like 5k posts and don't really care about those groups and dumb posts they make (ex. SG election thing). It's a forum, why do you want to feel like you are one of the most popular members around? It's not like you gonna get anything out of it. Anyways, if you really DO wonna feel like everybody knows you here, then just start talking to those that are obsessed with this forums on MSN etc.

But, yeah, you may have some valid points there about the long-timers getting away with a lot, however it is still not something that you should really worry about. If it was happening to you in life/school then there you have a problem.

Well, I don't see how I reacted like a dick there, but if you say so. And it was not that comment that made me write this thing, it was stuff I've seen during my entire 1st year.
I didn't say the 'elite' didn't accept me, and by elite I mean the veterans here on SG. I said that it was the veterans that was actually nice, and the guys between them and the beginners who was not.
Now, I'm not saying every guy acts badly towards noobs, but there are some that for some reason does.

I didn't join here to become lifelong friends with anyone, just a place to talk to people around the world with all kinds of things. And I definitively didn't join to receive BS for doing so.

Maximus:
I did say that I was going to continue to be my self. When I talked about the groups, I ment SG as a whole, not the small qlicks (sp.?) within. Those I have no wish to be a part of, except the juve and guitar thread. I just want to be able to post without having to worry about being called this and that, and being told I'm an ass.

And if you, meaning anyone, would find some post or thread to be stupid, there are different ways on letting that person know that. Telling people they are a stupid lowlife ass is not the way to help promote this forum. Contructive critisism is a virtue.

Now, I'm not hurt, nor do I sit in a corner and cry cause of the way people here act and acted towards me, it's just something I wanted to grab, because it really is a problem.

Don't wanna be rude or anything but if you write 30+ lines about 'the group mentality' on a board you should seriously get some friends.

Or play some FM like I do :p
