I am, and not afraid to say it, a noob when it comes to SG. The 25th of November this year I will have been member for one year. Considered with many of the “regular faces” on SG, that’s a short time. Now, I know that entering a group that has known each other for quite some time, is not easy. There are hundreds of examples on this matter, e.g. highschool gropus, a new work environment, the army etc, and usually it will take you some time before you are accepted as one of the group. But I didn’t know it would take more then a year. The past months or so I’ve been trying to post regularly and joining in on keeping the forum alive, and I feel that I have done a good job. However, there is someone that feels the opposite.
A couple of days ago, I sent a PM to one of the admins, telling him about a suggestion I had regarding the querry forum. My idea was to make a thread where people who are new at this, like me, could ask questions that didn’t need an own thread, cause then we wouldn’t get **** from the other “older” members on making ‘useless threads’. That meant short questions which needed only one answer (e.g. who’s the head admin?). The admin told me that in one way it was a good idea, but he feared if he made one, it would kill the forum. And that’s fair enough. The thing that impressed me, and yes, it actually impressed me, was that he bothered to answer me. I’ve PM some other mods on earlier occasions, but never received any answers from them.
So, since a thread like that wouldn’t be made, I asked my questions in one thread, and I took about 5 posts before I was told my threads are useless, and that I wasn’t a very smart guy. And this was not the first time I was exposed to the SG group mentality. Many times during my first year, have I seen this. And not only me, I have seen a lot of guys who haven’t been members for a long time, taking a lot of crap from the older members. The phenomenon here is that is not the really experienced guys who do this. They are actually quite nice. It’s the guys that is between the noobs and the (do I dare call it) the elite.
Why they feel so strongly about their group, and don’t want to accept anyone new in, I don’t know. Maybe they are trying to prove their worth to the admins, maybe they are trying to impress eachother, I couldn’t tell, because I’m no psychologist.
Luckily this isn’t the case all over the forum. There is one place where I, as a noob, am actually being treated as one of the guys, and that is in the Juventus team thread. I would like to use this opportunity to thank the guys in the Juventus team thread to actually accept me and I genuinely feel I’m a part of that group. Thank you.
I really hope that this do change one day, cause if the hostility towards the noobs continue, the forum will never grow (IMO). And I’m sure there will be a lot of guys that will laugh and give me **** for making this article, but that’s ok. I’m not afraid to be my self, and I will continue to be my self regardless of what people say to me. And maybe when I reach my post #10,000 after my fifth year I too will be accepted as a member of SG.
