It's true, most of the usual suspects tend to make it, but there's always a couple of upsets. Look at this latest round of matches where France, with all their stars, couldn't score against Luxembourg, and nearly lost. Things aren't always a formality.

Speaking of which: Chile (South American Champions) might not make it. Same with Portugal (European Champions), Australia (Asian Champions), and USA (North American Champions). Cameroon (African Champions) are already out.

Cameroon is quite bad. Dunno how they managed to win AFCON. When COL played them in a friendly on the 3rd June(?), I actually started wondering if their manager had somehow fielded wrong players. It wasn't even funny.

Shame about Chile, but not all is lost yet.. They've only got themselves to blame for this.

Italy under Ventura haven't looked *that* great either, they gotta fight for the 2nd place in their group. Portugal already out? Aren't they second in their group ahead of the 3rd with 6+ points?

Awful attempt from Mané. What was he thinking? Ederson could have a broken jaw and a bad concussion or something. I hope the guy is okay. One of the few City players I like, not that this is a reason for me wishing him well.

Short clip of the incident

Also, great defence splitting pass from the back by Matip.

Great, almost on the verge of qualifying.. 1-0 Falcao - https://streamable.com/20mhc .. Dominating the whole fucking match with Paraguay barely getting a shot on target... Then Ospina does this - https://streamable.com/o88ua , Cardozo shouldn't even be playing anymore..

Santi Arias goes 3vs2/1 + gk with an empty net after that, decides to go for a shot instead of passing it to Falcao or Teo who were in a much better position and not in offside.. The fucking defender straight in front of him blocks it. .. Then a minute later Yimmy Chara gets a chance... Bluffs it.. A counter and Paraguay score a second 90 + 2. Almost in tears.. So close to qualifying and now Colombia has got to beat Peru away from home.. A draw is only enough should Argentina bottle it against Ecuador (they haven't gotten a result against them in CONMEBOL qualifiers since 2001-03 or something).. Anyway this is bad.. Feels like Robben golazo in 2010, or David Luiz 2014, Nani getting sent off against Real by that Turkish ref etc...

You're basically qualified and in a few minutes all of it gets taken away from you because of idiotic mistakes.. Should've defended instead of going for a second goal. Wilmar Barrios for Aguilar was a good sub but WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? I'm still lost for words... Sorry for the rant.

It's just that this is plain stupid.

Also, anybody who complains about international breaks being pointless, focus your eyes on CONMEBOL qualifiers.. The pace is similar to EPL and it's got similar tactical play to Serie A and La Liga instead of "hoofing the ball upfield EPL".

Sepak, did you see this one? I',m still lost for words, although I've so many. I gotta wake up like in 5-6 hours, but this just made me drink even more instead of celebrating properly.

How the fuck did Colombia fuck that one up? You take the lead with 12 mins to go. Always defend to keep it, otherwise you get fucked in the ass.

Glorious change for Uruguay to qualify directly for the first time and they drew against already eliminated Venezuela. They have Bolivia at home and only need the 1 pt to make it.

Argentina host a match against a team who beat them to deny them qualification for the 1970 World Cup (first time they didn't make it) in the same stadium that first non-qualification occurred and they get a result which puts their qualification out of their hands. FFS.

4 pts difference between 2nd & 7th.

Uruguay only need a point against Bolivia at home in Montevideo - URU should beat BOL & qualify. If they lose, ARG can catch them for the playoff spot.
If Chile and Colombia both win - they both qualify. If Argentina and Peru both win and CHI doesn't - both ARG & PER qualify + COL are out.
Paraguay need to win and overturn a -4 GD against Venezuela. Can qualify directly if Chile, Colombia, Peru and Argentina don't win. (COL-PER draw)

It's so frustrating to watch this Argentina team play. The team is absolutely stacked with the best players in the world yet they fail to make things happen. I mean I understand that their midfield lacks depth but when you have players like Icardi, Dybala, Aguero and Messi, how can you not get results. I feel so bad for Messi. He does these amazing passes, finding his team mates and providing them the perfect pass just for them to bottle it. What a load of shit. What the fuck is Sampaoli even doing? This Argentina team, the same team that reached the finals last World Cup and the country that Messi plays for, might just not qualify. A World Cup without Lionel Messi?

They have an okay-ish goalkeeper(s), decent defence, midfield isn't anything to boast about really, that's why Messi drops so deep to playmake, but none of the forwards can finish off what he creates. They've tried everything, Agüero has like 0 goals from 7 or 8 matches, Higuain 1 goal from 9 or 10 matches, Maradona and other coaches have an issue with Icardi (Maxi Lopez & Wanda Nara), so he was called up only during the previous international brake. But since he isn't used to playing with the NT so much yet, you can't expect him to instantly deliver. Di Maria who has been tried out in various positions is shoddy playing for Argentina, and always misses easy chances that Messi puts on the plate for him.

At some point they even had local Argentine league striker Lucas Pratto (the guy even put one or two I think against Colombia when they last beat them 3-0) from River Plate starting instead of Higuain and Agüero (Icardi wasn't being called up then). But that was Bauza's team. In the last match against Paraguay they had Benedetto from Boca Juniors as a #9 lol.

Back to midfield - the likes of Biglia, Guido Pizarro, Ever Banega, Mascherano when he plays there (he's in decline anyway) are all great players, but I wouldn't call them absolute world class players. They could use some sort of an improvement in that area as well.

Another huge problem for them is Dybala. He basically plays in the same position as Messi, likes to occupy the same spaces, so there is just no room to start those two. He isn't a striker. La Joya himself commented as well that it's difficult to play with Messi, not like that they can't stand each other, but because of what I said earlier and them being quite alike in some aspects. He'd jump into every starting XI in the world, but this is why he hasn't started in the last two matches.

What's Sampaoli even doing? Well he's obviously aware of the fact that there is a problem, and is most likely trying to find some kind of a solution to it, trying out different systems, players etc. The only problem is that they are short on time.

Exactly!

Luckily for me I couldn't give a toss about Argentina. A World Cup without Messi would be a shame, though.

I just want Colombia to beat Peru tonight and qualify. It's going to be difficult, in some scenarios a draw should do, but then it'll depend on other results, which I don't like at all. I don't understand how they couldn't beat Venezuela last time out. Things would be so much different then.

I even decided to "free" myself from going to work tomorrow just in case, considering the match is taking place at like 2:30 AM, and it's one of those rare cases when I'll be drinking more than usual.

I'm kinda hoping Argentina doesn't make it because of reasons.

I feel those reasons too. I think we are screwed, in just 5 minutes we lost our chance to be already in the world cup, first time ever we can blame Ospina for the lost. I don't even want to watch the match tomorrow.

Oh God, I was so pissed off because of that as well. I mean Carlito Sanchez (have to mention him) and Ospina are usually the most reliable players who are always consistent. Also if you want to lay some blame onto someone, then Santi Arias qualifies as well. It was 3 against one, two players not offside and their goalkeeper off the line, all he fucking had to do was to pass the ball to Falcao who could've put it into an empty net and made it 2-1.. But oh dear..

Carlos Sanchez especially, I love that guy. His passing range is unbelievable. Too bad he isn't doing so good at club level, but it's so with many Colombians.. C. Zapata usually turns up for the NT, despite rarely playing for Milan.. His experience is much needed in the back. And Yerry Mina is my favourite player lol. It's good that you guys have so much depth in the CB department. Yerry Mina is something else though, he guarantees you at least 5-7 goals a season club level, since he's such a threat from set pieces.. Scored 2 against Cameroon in a friendly in the beginning of June for example. Too bad he's injured and Zapata is out against Peru. This means Davinson Sanchez and Oscar Murillo probably, but I'm content with that.

I think Cuadrado should be rested instead of Yimmi Chara, who's been awesome in recent matches. While Cuadrado is seriously lacking in the final third when it comes to offence.

I think Pekerman should go for the safer opinion and start Wilmar Barrios instead of Aguilar.. Aguilar is a fantastic player, but his body is seriously giving up. He's so important for our midfield though, when fit and on form. Carlito Sanchez provides the defensive quality, and his passing range is incredible. While Aguilar is the regista type of player who keeps things tidy in midfield, so James doesn't have to drop back so much.

Also, I don't want to see Cardona starting either.. The guy is obese, and is best when coming off the bench.. So maybe go with both Falcao and Teo? or Falcao and Luis Muriel (on the left flank)... Damn I'm soo nervous about this match.. I actually thought it would be tonight, but I messed up, cancelled work the next day for it, got drunk and an hour before "the match" discovered that it's not tonight.. So I gotta do it again. :S

But don't lose hope, we'll win that fucking match and qualify. It might seem bizarre me saying "we", but I've been following Colombian NT for so long, I watch every match, and there's no other way around it. Watching the team in action is always an highlight in my life to be fair.. It beats Man United and important CL matches etc...

I also love that there are so many Colombians playing together at Boca Juniors (Frank Fabra, Wilmar Barrios, Edwin Cardona and Sebastian Perez)... which helps.

Frank Fabra looked like a lost cause like a year ago, only good offensively, but useless defensively, but he has really improved in that position. I always wanted Farid Diaz to start instead of him, because he was more reliable defensively, but not anymore. The guy's class, and has a big future ahead of him.

Santi Arias is looking good too.. As long as Colombia doesn't have to field Frodo Stefan Medina. Now that guy is rubbish.

I just want the team to qualify for the WC so damn much.

Sorry for the long post, I got so pumped up for the match and a tad bit drunk.. And now I've confused the days..

Also, James is spectacular.. Every time he puts on the Colombia shirt he plays so well.. Loads of Bayern fans said after his few first performances for the club that he's already a better passer than Thiago, who was basically one of the best players in the Bundesliga last season.

This is the most infuriating part. The Argentina squad has both Aguero and Higuain! These are probably in the top 5 or top 10 strikers in the world and they can't finish? What a joke. Seriously it's so stupid. I think Argentina is just cursed. Man, I just want Messi to win the world cup so bad but his team mates are dragging him down so hard. I'll miss the game tomorrow because of school but I hope they win. I believe Messi has the flair to make things happen. I don't think Messi will allow himself to miss this World Cup. It could be now or never. Sorry if I fanboy too much. I really have no other team to support in the world cup other than Japan and Argentina. Argentina is in disarray and the Japanese NT doesn't look to promising either. But hey keep believing right?

CONMEBOL qualifiers is mental. Yet they have so few spots available. I think the region deserves more spot.

So Iceland become the smallest country to qualify for a World Cup and the first with less than 1 million people.

I pray for a EURO 2016 like run again.

And both Colombia and Peru made it. I knew it. Argentina too.

So it's Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia and Peru faces New Zealand in the play-offs.

Incredible feelings.
