Joking aside, I bet a bid of 10-12 million quid would get Sol Campbell in an instant. I know you dont want another English player, but there is a worldclass CB that, for whatever reason, has been iced out of Wenger's starting XI. However, I think in the long run it would really be preferrable to have 4 good CBs on call. Chelsea have 4 guys for the position, and yet they all still get ample playing time, so maybe getting a veteran and a young, up and coming CB this summer would be the way to go.

Speaking of English centre backs

wow, i must say how impressed i am with the patience you guys have shown with Woody. He's an immense CB when he's fit, i'd choose him over Terry in the England squad anyday... when fit.
What, like in 2002? Believe me, I think Woodgate is/was a good defender, and was, though it was a bit inflated, worth his pricetag. But there is no way he gets ahead of Terry at this point. The pecking order, as of now, should go Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell if he can get games at Arsenal, Carragher, King, and then Woodgate. He may surprise me when he finally gets playing, but he has got a long way to go to get back to the fitness he needs for England.

i think now Woodgate is fit, if he plays well at Madrid the pecking order would probably be:

Ferdinand, Terry and then between Sol and Woody

When Woodgate gets going and has a very decent run of games under his belt he is up there with the best in the world. I also think that his style of play also fits better with Rio's than Terry's does. And there is no way that Rio is going to get dropped. He's the best defender in the world at the moment, better than Terry.

1. Agreed: Woodgate is worldclass when at his best, and there can be no doubt about it

2. Perhaps he fits better in the England squad than does Terry, as JT has never looked as good for England as he has for Chelsea until this season

3. I never said Rio would be dropped. He is the defensive talisman for England, end of story, but hopefully not the next captain

4. John Terry was, in the opinion of many, the best defender on planet earth last year, when he simply never had the occasional bad game that Rio was prone to, and led the best team in England to a record season, and on that there can be no denial. Since not much has changed since then in terms of games played, I would say that still applies to now, meaning Terry is still the best defender in England and the world. Now, if your talking about natural talent and the totality of their footballing ability, thats a whole 'nother matter (cue the Lampard vs. Gerrard argument)

Raul Bravo for Silvestre? What a screwjob! :hit:

meh. you're a Chelsea fan. i'm a Man Utd fan. we have different opinions. we're not gonna agree. can't be arsed to argue.

btw - the whole Silvestre thing was a joke, although if the right offer came in i'd be surprised if we didn't sell.

If Woodgate could play anything like Terry did for Chelsea last year I'd love it.

Terry was a machine last year.

Just pray for Woody's health :(

Good little debate, but agreed, dont wanna argue either, least of all in another teams thread. And I knew the whole Silvestre thing was a joke, but you do honestly need to relegate that guy to the bench: He's your only weak link in defense. If you didnt need a defensive mid so bad, you could put all your remaning cash into a worldclass CB

Nobody plays quite like JT (H) But seriously, Madrid have made a smart decision by sticking by Woodgate. I guess they didnt wanna lose their investment for nothing, but he seems like a genuine guy, and Im sure that if he gets back to proper health and form, he will play like a man possessed as a thank you to the club. Just pray he doesnt play too hard, or else he could end up back at sqare one :(
