The subtleties of crossing in FIFA 10 PC

The subtleties of crossing in FIFA 10 PC continues to blow me away. With manual through passes and manual crossing set to on, and some ai.ini balancing, the amount of ways you can cross the ball is simply astounding.

There is:

Left analog stick + cross button = aim toward a player hold down to engage and set power up meter. ball will go to the nearest player taking into account distance and left analog stick direction
Left analog stick + L2 + cross (L2 + cross pressed at exactly the same time and held down while aiming) = manual cross, will not go to any player in particular but to a precise position based on L-stick direction and powerup meter
Left analog stick + L1 + cross = quick manual cross / short pass that does not require a powerup

Left analog stick + L2 + through pass = a manual cross of a different trajectory with no visual power up meter, yet holding down the through pass button does create a longer cross

L1 + shoot = grubber shot or manual pass from free kick

And this isn't even all the ways to cross a pass. I find it best to actually mix up the ways you cross. One possession i'll do a L2 + cross manual high arcing cross, the next possession i'll do a quick L1 + cross when a defender is closing in on me so i don't have to wait for the powerup metere. Then i'll do a L2 + through pass cross.

There are even more subtle controls that I know. Do you guys use all these different types of crosses for FIFA 10 PC?

This is where the lack of a decent manual (not that FIFA has ever had a good manual, but it has definitely become skimpier as the years have gone on) disadvantages those of us without the time to spend experimenting. I didn't even know about any of those combinations let alone have the spare brain cells to fashion those kinds of crosses. Amazing

Yep, I did. On the keyboard. Definitely more enjoyable than spamming regular crosses from the flanks. :)

Yeah more enjoyable for sure. Also depending on the jostling and difficulty, regular cross directly to a player isn't a surefire thing. It could result in a defender getting an automatic header out of the zone. with the manual cross you can actually cross into a random area in the penalty zone, and unlike regular crosses, you actually see players try to run to the cross, instead of the cross automatically coming to them. The interesting thing to me is just how subtle the manual cross is.

L2 is the cancel / dummy button for me. And just to be clear : If you hold down L2 first, and with L2 held down, then you powerup your cross, it will still be an automatic cross. You have to press and hold down the cancel / dummy button and the cross button at exactly the same time. More than that, you can't just hold a direction. you actually have to aim the left analog stick in the motion of the cross at the exact moment you release dummy/cancel and cross. if the left analog stick is not moving, the cross will not be accurate. there is a specific timing to when you have to direct the kick and actually make a crossing kicking motion with the left analog stick upon release. It took me months to get this timing right in FIFA 10 PC, but now that i have it, it's very fun and creative. the best feeling is being able to do a manual cross in open field and see your player have to chase down a ball.
