The Trouble With England (National team)

So we hurtle towards another World Cup qualification campaign, with yet another new leader at the helm - already the decisions are being scrutinised and I have to say that the Czech Republic team and performance didn't fill me with confidence.

So simply put, what is England's problem and how can it be fixed?

First of all, we the fans need to screw our heads on and realise that currently the England team is nowhere near the top of football and that we do not have any right to consider ourself a major player on the world stage - although in club football we are at the apex of it.

So lets break this down, and we need to because the problem is a deep rooted one.

Firstly it is clear that the FA is run by people who don't have a clue. We need to get some real football brains in Soho Square, instead of the usual government fat cats who are boning secretaries and living off backhanders.

Next is the pressure from the media, specifically the tabloid press. Every time we squeak through to a finals, the media is immediately ramping up the old "x years of hurt will come to an end"

Instead of living vicariously off the memory of 1966, perhaps we should have charged ourself long ago with saying "so why aren't we winning now?"

The continued callups of "Big names" like Lampard and Beckham, even though for the former - he has never achieved his Chelsea form for England, and Beckham is fading, shining his dim light over a poor league.

I don't know if you've looked, but England has some fantastic talent out there - Agbonlahor, Young, Walcott, Richards, Wright Phillips etc. Yet in the last match Capello took Steven Gerrard (widely regarded as a world class central midfielder) and played him on the left - which was to allow a woeful Lampard to play in the middle. Joe Cole, one of the best left sided midfielders in the world was on the bench - while Young and Agbonlahor were in the U21's!

Wayne Rooney is played out of position and why the hell is Emile Heskey getting yet another shot?

It seems to me that there are influences demanding that these big names play - is that the media or the sponsors? Either way I don't think Fabio Capello is the kind of guy to pick sub par performers on reputation alone (Look at Beckham's last season at Madrid)

So come on, who would you play / pick for England?

GK: Until Ben Foster gets games and fitness, It has to be James. He can still make a ricket or two - but he is an excellent shot stopper on his day.

RB: Not a glamorous choice this but I'd stick with Wes Brown, his recent club form has been excellent.

CB's Has to be Rio Ferdinand, partnered with John Terry.

LB: Ashley Cole is still a brilliant left back, so I'd stick with him.

LW: Joe Cole - a box of tricks and seems to haver got better over the last couple of years.

CM Partnership: It's bye-bye Frank as I'd go with my Captain Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves - these two compliment each other - Hargreaves ensures the back four have protection while Lampard and Gerrard just get in each other's way. With current injuries - Jimmy Bullard is a good addition.

RW: Sorry Becks - but I think it's time for Shaun Wright Phillips or David Bentley. I'd probably give the edge to Bentley though.

SS: Wayne Rooney, playing in the hole and using his excellent vision to pick out my new England striker Gabby Agbonlahor.

You would put Ben Foster and Wes Brown as starters wouldn't you, Mikey?

I believe Ben Foster is the best young English keeper out there and will take the no1 slot, and yeah I'd start Wes Brown as he did an excellent job in what last season was arguably the top defence in the Champions League.

I think it's high time to shake up the old guard of the English Team. I know what you're thinking - Micah Richards is a fine player and would be in my squad - but I'd give the edge to Wes on current form.

I must say that would be an awesome England team to watch.

Haha wow Mikey has sure been angry this last couple of days :D

The problem with English National Team is that they haven't won anything since 66', that's the problem. They always think they're one of the favourites when they're actually not that good... so you could probably say their problem is the same as Uruguay, West Germany and USSR.

Although Germany have reached the semi-finals/finals of 3 of the last 4 major tournies. Can't remember what happened in the last two Euros, but maybe they did well there too. Have England actually reached a semi-final in the past decade?

The problem with the English team is that most of them are English (H)

They need to nationalize more Spaniards. (I can say this now that we've actually won something!)

Mikey, threads like this only serve the needs of the anti English bigots on the forums. I don't know why you bothered mate. These morons actually think that our tabloids reflect the thoughts of England's players and England fans. Thats how bigoted and stupid some of them are.

Oh, and if Lampards performances for England have been woeful, then why is he England's highest scoring midfield player mate? If any of our midfielders underachieve for England it's Gerrard. He'd be a good sub though.

Foster in goal, are you mad? Joe Hart is 10 times the goalie Foster will ever be if you are looking to the future. I think I remember Foster playing for England, don't you? Once is enough.

Wes Brown? Do me a favour mate, Richards is miles better. Brown is a donkey and will always be a donkey. He has no brain just a big boot.

Interesting to see Jamie Carraghers comments this week regarding England. He said (and it's in his new book), that losing with England didn't bother him all that much. It hurt him a lot more when Liverpool lost.

When he missed a penalty for England the first thing he thought was "So what". Then he went on to say that if he had missed a penalty for Liverpool then that would have been upsetting, but to miss one for England didn't mean so much. Thank god he was never good enough to hold down a regular spot in the team.

That kind of sick attitude from our players, is the main reason why we are sh!t right now. How many other players put their clubs way higher than their country? Too many I would guess.

As for the reason we have underachieved for so long, well you only have to look at the morons who were given the managers job. D.Revie, G.Taylor, G.Hoddle, H.Wilkinson, K.Keegan, S.McClaren. 'nuff said.

I wouldn't include Venables and Sven in that list because all in all they both did pretty well during their tenure as manager. Venables was the better of the two, and the FA still sacked him in favour of Hoddle. Twats.

I don't know mate, despite the history that I used to hate Wes in our squad, it can't be denied that Wes was the best Manchester United defender last season. His performance in the semi final against Barcelona where he was put head to head against Messi, and made him totally ineffective was Beckebauer-ish like, Messi got pass anybody except Wes, he was a "Messi-Raper"... Richards is very athletic and strong and I would wanna have him banging from the right wing, but if you wanna have a sort of a balance between attack and defense Wes is the man for me these days for England.

Nah, as much as he's improved, I still never want to see Brown in an England shirt.
And yes, the managers have been truly atrocious.
The thing that pissed me off about Eriksson was that when we were losing he'd change nothing. No plan B no nothing. He just sat there and hoped for the best.
Our past defeats against Brazil, Northern Ireland, Portugal (WC 2006) are the best examples.
Carragher just justifies what most people think, that the players just don't care enough. I mean the first thing you think about after missing a penalty at the World Cup for your country shouldn't be "at least it wasn't for Liverpool".
I'm sorry but this is just really weak.

Brown definately has improved over the last couple of seasons but is he good enough still? I personally don't think he comes anywhere near.

I've been looking at the under 21 squad. They have gone 3 years without a defeat. That is a very good record indeed. I watched them at Wembly recently against Portugals under 21's, where they won 2-0, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and hunger that they showed. If these guys are the future for England, then perhaps things are going to be rosier than we thought. Joe Hart in goal was immense.

So the question needs to be, why can the under 21's maintain such a good record that puts them up there with the rest of the strongest nations, but the senior England squad has been in the main so dissapointing?

The answer has to be the dross managers that have been in charge, and of recent times, total loss of player confidence due to the ineptitude of the managers appointed.

Fans booing the players doesn't help the cause either. There are a lot of moronic fans who watch England who just cannot leave club rivalry out of the England scene.

The England team needs the support of all of us English fans whatever club we support. You will never hear me boo an England player just because he doesn't play for Chelsea. This disgraceful behaviour has gone on for too long, and although players might say that the endless cat calls and booing does not bother them, believe me it does. It's not just the player in question who eventually loses confidence, it is the entire squad.

We need fan unity, but when I attend England games and see the morons that turn up just to give the team some stick, I fear that those days are far behind us. Until club rivalry is put to one side things do not have much chance of improving.

The U21 record really doesn't account for much, I mean, Frank Jeffers is the best player ever if it does.

England 2-Andorra 0.

87% possession to England over the 90 minutes, tells us how much England dominated the game, which was the least we should expect against part timer's Andorra.

The first 45 minutes Andorra parked the bus, and invited our attack to try to find a way through 11 men defending. There was nothing wrong with Englands build up play. In fact Walcott on the right wing had a great game as he ran rings around Andorra's wide defenders, and put in some lovely balls which more often than not, couldn't find a way through 22 Andorran legs. Downing on the other wing was less impressive though. He's not good enough at all IMO.

Although it was a tidy performance by all the players, and we saw a huge improvement in movement, desire and discipline, this game would, should and was a lot easier than Wednesday's game will be against Croatia. That will be a sterner test than this for Fabio's managership.

For Fabio's first competitive game as England coach, the overall performance of the team, needed to be an obvious improvement from the McClaren era. It was all that, and I for one was happy and relieved to see it.

Joe Cole scored our 2 goals after coming on (once again) as a super sub. The ball played by Rooney (who had a good game), for Joe's second goal was a peach, which nutmegged the first defender and glided through the Andorran defence for Joe to pounce. Nice move.

3 points is what we needed and 3 points is what we got. That'll do for me.

Croatia Wednesday. That'll be interesting. (Y)

Pede against Croatia would you start Walcott on the Right? Id prefer to see him come off the bench as an impact player, with his pace, in the second half when the game starts to open up a bit more and the defenders get tired he can cut teams to pieces on the counter
