It's the Gold Cup. It means absolutely nothing. Oribe scored a hat trick against Cuba and he's missed every sitter since.

Yeah I agree it really doesn't mean anything. I'm fine with him operating up top through 2018, but he's going to have to keep up his fitness until then.

how confident are you that he'll be able to do so? who's being groomed for plan B?

Probably Rubin if I had to say a name. I don't know if he will be able to, but the shorter MLS seasons should help. Certainly his talent is greater than any other attacking player we have.

the Gold Cup is meaningless in every sense, apart from the ticket to Russia a year early ... but I still feel it's a waste to have Wondo still involved ... hopefully the Centenario Copa next year goes ahead, and guys like Johannsson, Zardes, Rubin, and even Soñora (if he's still relevant) being tested in meaningful, competitive games (if the whole thing is actually taken seriously) before the World Cup rehearsal ...

In an ideal world the combined style of the Centenario would replace the both CONMEBOL & CONCACAF championships but CONCACAF teams would think their World Cup places would potentially be at risk.

Gold Cup is good in a way, it makes a shitload of money for the federations. And, you know, with this being Concacaf and all they need it because someone probably embezzled the rest of it.

It isn't the best prep for the World Cup.

I don't think you can say that, honestly. CONCACAF has done well in the Confederations Cup relative to the general ranking of its teams (I think Mexico has won, and USA nearly did). In addition, the 3 major CONCACAF teams all advanced to the knockout stages last time. We're doing as well, or slightly better, than you would expect from the general strength of our teams. Certainly we're doing better than African teams who are better, but performing worse.

should have played in the goddamn Copa ... I believe it's paying off for Jamaica ... now it's no Copa and no Confeds for The Von Trapps; not good for preparation at all ...

We can still qualify for the Confederations Cup, Concacaf has a Super Gold Cup now so they can make more money, err, determine the Confed Cup representative. We qualified by winning the last one.

they seriously, need to have this bullshit of a "gold cup" every 4 years and who ever wins gets to go to the money making confederations cup.
