During the 2002 Winter Olympics, there was a problem caused by a judging controversy in figure skating. It occurred fairly early on in the Olympics and was detracting from the Olympic experience by grabbing the headlines for nearly a week after that event had finished. The media and fans around the world were interested in voicing their opinion/complaining about that one event and weren't focusing on the other Olympic events. There was nothing positive coming out of it. It had to be fixed ASAP!

To prevent it from totally consuming the Olympics, the IOC president intervened by correcting the WRONG DECISION of the judge in question.

Joseph S Blatter needs to learn from History and fix the problem with his tournament. The problem is the presence of the vuvuzela! It is only a matter of time before it consumes this World Cup.

I don't like them but they shouldn't be banned and they should be respected since it's a people's culture we're talking about. Why do they have to be so loud though, isn't there any way to design them so that they make a bit less noise?

Yes. By banning them. There's only one way to make them softer......and that's by banning them!

Sorry but that's the truth and you know it.

are you watching on ESPN/TSN? coz they've definitely turned down the crowd volume ... look at what Mikey watching on a different feed in England had to say about the opening match:

Ummm exactly. They have to turn down the crowd so all we get is commentary and a feint annoying buzzing sound in the background... Yeah, really great.

And no, commentary isn't all I expect from the audio of a match. I'd rather have a great crowd compared to commentary.

I cannot comprehend at what point so many people decided they were the best thing to do at a stadium.

They showed a close up of a fan during the FRA vs URU game... he was in South African colours looking to the sky and blowing big puffs into his trumpet over and over while fans either side of him looked like they were going to either kill him or themselves. Summed it up really. Bunch of moronic attention seekers.

Doesn't seem like it's going to die down in non SA matches, and if TV stations are having to drastically reduce the crowd sound then that's a real shame. It definitely can ruin the event.

You don't get it... its not the only thing but it takes away from the game. The end.

It does make a difference. Sure. But it certainly doesn't "ruin" the World Cup. Many of you guys are overacting to that IMO.

The vuvuzela's actually lessen the atmosphere despite how noisy they are. Also hard to hear what the match commentators say at times.

LOL. keep on crying then.

You're United boy is lying flat on his over-rated arse, on the pitch, looking up at the wintery cold South African sky as Messi glides past half of the Republic's starting XI to score a great World Cup goal yet you can't hear the crowd react to his every dribble with louder oohs and aahs crescendoing as the ball crosses the line because when the referee indicates that a goal has been scored you feel as though the queen bee is directing the swarm towards your groin and mute the TV in sheer disgust and despair.

Son, you just missed out on history.

lol. As I said above, the crowd is not everything. Just to make it easier to understand, the crowd noise probably makes up 10-20% of my enjoyment of football. If that part is gone, I still have the other 80-90% to enjoy which is good enough to me. I'm not gonna make a fuss about it.

I have to admit it..its is very annoying. Not looking foward to any SA games. I dunno if some of them came to watch the football or blow that trumpet thing non stop for the entire 90 mins.

Ok, so you are saying you are giving up 10-20 % of the match experience. I for one would like to retain that and enjoy it. I too will watch the full world cup, I am just commenting on the circumstances.

because you're deaf that's why and you're accustomed with this handicap but people with hearing are bothered by the annoying sounds around them, especially if those are louder then plane engines.

Fortunately the noise seems to be not that loud and annoying, if SA dont play. Still bothers me, though. But i definitely wont watch any more SA game, thats for sure. Thank god there will be only 2 more.

Well it does make the WC experience slightly worse, I'm not denying that. But it certainly doesn't "ruin" the WC experience... Many of you are dramatising things imo. Obviously having the 100% of the WC experience would be best though. But having the 80-90% is not so bad at least to me.

LOL. I'm not the only one saying I don't mind the sound... Does that mean we're all deaf? Its just subjective. Some people tend to ignore the sound and don't notice it, some people can't. Simple as that. Its just subjective.

Only thing is, the crowd noise doesn't compliment the action. When the SA match was over, the noise was exactly the same, I wouldn't have known the match was over if the commentator hadn't said so. There's no difference in noise between when a goal is scored or a throw-in is taken. Takes away from the experience.

Exactly, this is the main reason I really don't like them. They drown all chants, songs and other reactions by the crowd completely.
