Yeah, Messi is Argentina's best player without a doubt but I think I am starting to agree that he should be taken little by little. In the Sub 20 World Cup Messi was a sub the first game and we all know what happened afterwards...

exactly man. messi is a brilliant player, its joy to watch him. BUT at world cup, there is always a very big difference for players performances. at a stage like this huge, players like Riquelme , Aimar is safer to use (i would think these guys have something around 30 caps)
Messi is a great addition to the team at the second half, exactly when we start to see aimar or riquelme's fitness level going down.
its always "safer the better" in international stage. thats how greeks won the last european cup.

Yep, although I think that big matches don't scare him (Against Real Madrid or against Chelsea for example) but I think that not having played for over 70 days is a big factor.

I don't know about you Axolote or Diablo, but we have already seen in these two last matches that the players are trying to surprise the goalkeeper with shots from outside the box. Do you guys think Abbondanzieri will be able to handle this?

I don't remember seeing long shots by Droga, but if the defenders don't give them space i guess there will be ne troubles, even if they shot they still could fail. Regarding the bench i still insist, it's the first match if it's needed Pekerman will not doubt on bringing Messi and Tevez, and even Aimar. I don't want Palacio to start because if he plays good he will be overhyped, however it's true that it could be an adventage since the players of Ivory Coast don't know him.

Some sayings:

Mascherano: "On this team there aren't starters or substituties."
Cufre: "This could be the world cup of Palacio."

I have to disagree to this and to the other posters saying to take him little by little. Over this season in la liga he has been the player to impress me the most, yes even more than Dinho. Also to the person that said Pekerman will use Saviola's speed vs Ivory Coast, why not use Messi's speed? I mean everytime I watch him play he makes something happen, he is a very dangerous player that can change the game...imo the only bad thing about his is his finishing at times and that he plays for Barca ( :( ). I dont care how old he is or that he does not have the experience of the other players, he is still imo better than those other guys and I really think he can lead Argentina far in this WC.

thats what i m saying. he is a brilliant player, but at world cup stage, bags of experience is always needed.

Yeah, but we have to remember that he is only 18. Maybe just let him be a sub the first game and see what happens...

...well after playing a season for Barca in La Liga/CL I dont think he will crack...I mean he did very well vs us and Chelsea. Two very big games and he did very well.

Axolote

Senior Squad
Messi will start in the game against Serbia and Montenegro i think...

He doesnt start against Ivory Coast becouse he only played 80-70 minutes (or less) in the last 70 days, its a big risk to use him right now...

Messi injury was becouse the pressure and all the media hype he suffered after the game in Stamford Bridge (Mourinho saying he acted, and Del Horno intentions to injure him), so i dont think its safe enough to put him right away in the WC...little by little.
