That was a bad call at the end, yes, but overall that game was officiated very well. Very few cards and the players were sporting and in control all game. The red to Materazzi and the pen at the end were the only two wrong decisions, and in both cases it was hardly as black and white as people seem to think it was

I don't believe any other referee would had done better.

What did you guys expect him to do?
Disappear?

There were on this game:

- Blantant-studs up fouls trying to injure players.
- Clear red-card offense sliding-tackles.
- Elbows to the face.
- Headings to the face.
- Punches to the face.
- Shoving out of play.
- Flying kicks to the upper body.
- Clear yellow-card offense dives. (You know who I'm talking about... ;) )
- Bad sportsmanship.
- Indiscriminate use of the hands to stop/control the ball.

Do I need to continue?

This game can practically cover the entire FIFA Training DVD.

What a joke, do you not understand the referee's inability to control the game allowed for the players to do ALL of those things? THAT MAKES HIM A TERRIBLE REFEREE! Anyone who believes that anything besides the worst officiated game in the history of the World Cup, please don't reproduce ever.

The ref doesn't need to tell the players constantly "please don't try to break your opponent's legs" "don't tackle people over their knees" "don't head each others". They know exactly what kind of fouls deserve a yellow or a red card. It's player bussiness to control themselves.

In fact the referee was soft; Figo header and tackles over Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo also deserved straight reds.

Uh, I think we are all in agreement that he was soft. That's how the game got out of hand. Players are going to do whatever the referee allows to win the game - diving, cheating, hard tackling. It's the referee's job to control the game and he did not do that. He let the game get out of hand when Figo wasn't red carded for his headbutt on Van Bommel. Sure, he was playacting afterwards trying to draw attention to the headbutt, but Figo still struck Van Bommel. If he sends him off there, Figo doesn't put his face into the Dutch defender's elbow and get him sent off, which is when the game boiled over. Figo has definately showed his class this World Cup as a diver and cheat.

I think you're harsh on Figo. He've showed he's calss also as a still decent player and this one incident doesn't make it different.
Anyway, as for this silly referee bashing that is going on here, I think you're all whiney pansies. You're talking about this mistic ''controling the game'' that ref was ought to be doing, but fail to give any constructive advices on how to manage that besides penalising the players ang giving them verbal warnings, both of witch the ref did. Players on both teams were aggressive feckturds and they got what they deserved. What, refferee should've shot somebody in the leg thus maintaining the control over the behaviour of those thugish turds?

I am of the opinion that diving and fouling cancel each other out. Figo gets ejected for a headbutt, Van Bommel gets a second yellow for simulation and gets sent off, and the teams are even again anyway. Why not let them play? I agree that a headbutt warrants a red card, but this was more like a tap, and to send him off would have rewarded Van Bommel's shameful dive.

Also, Figo much be pretty damned brave to intentionally get elbowed in the face.

I think that the referees in this WC have been really outstanding, and they have been very good! I know that it have been some terrible refereeing in about 3 matches, and by terrible I mean REALLY crappy.
But in the other matches the referee have been terrific, an example is Archundia in the Switzerland vs. Ukraine match, I thought that he were absolutelly terrific, so in my opinion the refereeing in this WC have been great except for 2 or 3 matches that have been awful....

The only thing that refs always get wrong is offside, they are supposed to call tight situations in the striker's favour, but they actually never do.
