WC Round of 16: Portugal vs Netherlands [P] + [R]

God, this thread is a farce.

First topic, Portugal.
Scolari got his tactics spot on tonight despite what people think. The back four defended deep to negate the attacks of Holland and the discipline showed by the midfield and forwards to close down within their own half meant Portugal were effectively defending from the half way line, and Holland had hardly any answers for this until the players started bitching.

After that, Holland despite having the ball and a numerical advantage did not take advantage of it, they lacked creativity in the midfield it’s that simple. Van der Vaart should of started, as should of Van Nistelrooy because frankly, Kuyt does not cut it when playing in the Van Nistelrooy role.

The referee did nothing wrong to be honest except for Deco’s red card, but the rest of the cards were justified and it was a bitch fest with some poor sportsmanship being showed by the two sides.

Now this thread, it’s hardly civilised to refer to England’s problems in the past of hooliganism as a means of 'comeback' in reference to the behaviour of the players today. First, hooliganism is a horrible thing but no nation in the world has been more pro active than England to stamp it out, they are the yard stick now as one only has to look at the FA to see what they have done to stamp it out and bring the game back to the families, something that should be applauded. Second, its completely out of context to refer to such a thing.

The fans of both sides should be appalled at some of the actions of the players.

The real winner is England. Portugals first team line up has been desimated as a result of cards, and injuries and should FIFA ban Figo for the next match, then they are in real trouble.

I'm watching MOTD and the English commentators are saying that the English supporters going to laugh it up after this game.
van Basten says:"It was just a mess"
According to the guys at MOTD, they are saying Portugal's play was a disgrace so Pete's right about that  I can see the headlines tomorrow :o
The referee ruined the game is what they are saying, major losses to Portugal that Deco and Ronaldo are out. "GREAT NIGHT FOR ENGLAND" says Martin 'O Neill.
And you hoping that the Portuguese will dive for penalties, old news isn't it cause that's what they always do

Where did you saw that Ronaldo was out??

What a game.

I haven't posted/read on this forum for a while but just reading a few pages back in this forum completely justifies that. Most of you are a bunch of total retards.

I think every slightly objective fan around the world would agree with me that it was the ref that killed this game. I've hardly ever seen that kind of a poor performance by a referee.

Portugal scored a good goal. They had one or two dangerous attacks after that, besides that I wasn't impressed. My feelings about Holland haven't changed. The only thing we've done well this tournament has been defending. Apart from that it's been poor. Attacking wise there's been no midfield. I still feel Van Nistelrooij has been the victim of failing attacking play from the midfield. We created some chances against Portugal but overall it was a bad game. I won't go into detail about the cards. The ref made a mess of it, I think we can all agree on that.

Boulahrouz's tackle on Ronaldo was disgracefull, Figo made a meal out of it later, like Van Bommel did when Figo clearly (RED CARD!) headbutted him, that handball by Portugal was tough luck, Deco didn't deserve a yellow card, and Robben had a good call when he was hit by a straight leg in the box.

1-0 Is nowhere near a fair result. Overtime whould've been fair with, due to the ref 9 against 9. But in the end Portugal outsmarted us, and fair enough, Holland hasn't played a decent (attacking) match since we've played Mexico and Cameroon in the WC build-up.

Our time will come. See you in 2008.

Good luck to England, who like Holland have been playing rather pathetic so far.

props man. you're a better man than the rest of us for keeping a cool head and actually posting something intellegent in the middle of this circus! (Y)

Now its funny you should mention those countries man, because they do exactly the same thing. Its a mainland Europe thing and a latino thing. Being an island we do not get so contaminated by the rest of Europe. We manage to keep a sense of fair play, and still generally frown upon those aspects of sport. Maybe its that hot sun beating down on your heads or something i dont know but you sure all think in a wierd way.

Hey Pede. Do you understand you have no morale to say such thing ? I believe you're inteligent enough to understand this. It is quite simple. The worlds media reckons England as the main source of hooligans in the planet. And you call animals to the portuguese NT because they dive (yes, they, as in your opinion every and each portuguese player dives) ?

It's not only diving it's attacking on players legs, handing out headbutts and so on, Bouhlarouz attack on Ronaldo was a bad one sure but after that all hell broke loose  and our players lost their heads in the process I was so hoping they could keep their cool but obviously they couldn't :(

likewise. You can be a really annoying twat at times I gotta tell ya, but it's good to argue with someone who knows football existed before 1997.

OMG Jose.....I forgot about him for a moment. Yep that should be interesting.

Anyway man. Stop leading me back here with these posts. I already left the thread twice and i can only make my excuses so many times you know, before it gets embarrassing.....heheheheeee

Nice game, with some players showing their real class, i.e. Deco and Heitinga :alex:

Portugal deserve to go through cause Holland didn't manage to win a team with 1 man less almost the whole match.

oh boo hooo. Portugal should have still played fairly after the Ronaldo tackle. Who gives a ****? It was the referee's fault not Holland's. It comes to show how GAY your team is, crying and diving all of sudden just because your FAGGOT FAIRYBOY RONALDO got tackled.

I would have done the same thing with not obeying the "Fair Play" rule. It's out of courtesy right? BULL**** then, I wouldn't have been courteous to the Portuguese either, but tackling the guy who broke the courtesy rule is BEYOND THE RIDICULOUS.

Either way, I hope Portugal gets OWNED in the quarters

It isn't out of contest. If we all reckon those problems, and we also reckon England is usually associated with them, calling the Portuguese NT animals because some of them dive, coming from an English fan, is just :|

Heh, and I thought some of my American compatriots were whiny bitches when we lost...

Anyway, one question:
Is there some history between the Netherlands and Portugal? That game was an absolute dogfight from the very beginning.

alright, alright... I think we're starting to go in circles here and not making any progress. what's done is done, it's game over..

Thanks. I've alrady taken my loss. We've not been dealt good cards this WC, first with group we were in and right after that a good team like Portugal. I knew it was going to be difficult. We've been difficult to beat, but we've also hard a time to create stuff.

From the first game against Serbia, our attacking play has been the traditional English long ball, while we can do so much better. Somehow I think Portugal are nowhere near as good as in 2004. In 2004 you played us off the pitch, this time, imo, you never looked like doing so.

Holland's problem lies in midfield, where we never should've played a three man midfield with Sneijder playing behind Cocu and Van Bommel, imo. We've never looked creative or dangerous from midfield this tournament.

For the first time in years we seem to have that "Italy" vibe. Playing bad, but getting results, it's been like that since Van Basten took over. Our defence needs more experience (Boula, Mathijsen, Heitinga) but they're looking great so far.

In midfield is where our problems lie. We don't have a Riquelme, Gerrard, Beckham, Ballack, Ronaldinho, Zindane or whoever. We lack creativity. Up front it all looks good. Van Perise and Robben, both 22 year olds were the only creative guys, Van Nistelrooij needs a new club and can go on for two more years after which Huntelaar will be more then ready (real successeor to Van Basten??) to replace him.

I'm sad we're out, I think, had we won this we could've beaten England, because they're nowhere near as good as all the Enligh guys think (since you've effectively got no attack, besides a half fit Rooney and Crouch who wouldn't even get a first team place at my amateur club, and a coach who seems to fear a balanced midfield, and plays Cole, Beckham, Gerrard and Lampard all together) but we would've lost against the World Champion to be, Germany.
