WE/PES Overhyped?

well, since I only have an Xbox and live in US - I had ho choice but play FIFA for years.
However, this month WE 8 was finally released on XBOX in US. So after reading this forum for a while and reading tons and tons of very positive reviews of WE/PES - I bought the game.

Of course I expected to see exceptional game with unparalleled depth, after all those hysterical assurances by PES fans.

Imagine my surpise...

The first thing - the menus. They just stink. They look like made for computers of the 80s.
Some kind of Option File loading.

However, I was patient with all that and hurried to the gameplay.
Well, it plays like a cockroach race. Players run around at cockroach speeds, passing te ball in straight line little passes, which from time to time just go wherever they like.

The gameplay is fun and becomes addictive after a while - if your eyes are not extremely tired from trying to see the player and the ball - for camera angles are poor.
From anything closer than "Wide" - there is no way to see to whom to pass, and playing with "Wide" view - player and the ball looks like small strategic peaces. Or rather - players look like tiny bugs moving their feet and hands at blindning speeds, turning every direction at inhuman speeds.

By the way - PES/WE is more strategic game than FIFA. It is more like very fast RTS with action elements.

It has little to do with football though.

This is no way to say that FIFA is "better". FIFA has enough of its own flaws. However, when FIFA resembles action-shooter game, PES/WE resembles RTS-racing game.

PES/WE AI - it is interesting actually - for when AI wants to win it increases its speed to such degree that it gets impossible to defend.
FIFA seems fairer in this regard. There is no "AI revenge" in FIFA 2005, while there is in PES/WE.

Well, in conclusion - PES/WE is highly overhyped. It is no way worth all these praises and ratings, in my opinion.
Also, in no way - it is a "football simulation". It is football theme RTS game with racing elements.

Siena, that is Hillarious ... :funny: But so, so True.

I have given myself an open mind for the last 3 months, in trying this game. ( 5 min PC Demo & Friends full Xbox version )
But i still can,t see what all the hype about this game is.
I am also unable to see this so called huge gulf in gameplay, between PES4 and Fifa05.
PES does just edge it, i will admit, due to imo:
1) Slightly smoother flowing gameplay.
2) Slightly more control over players movement/actions.
3) More realistic shooting system. ( which i think is excellent btw)

Apart from that and the ability to save your Replays, i can only more or less agree with what you have said.

well, in my opinion FIFA and PES/WE do have different gameplay.

FIFA is more action oriented. You have to time everything perfectly, and react fast. However, once you get into the flow - it goes easily and after a while it gets boring because AI players have quite rigid behaviour patterns and you know what to expect from them.
Since gameplay is more action oriented, the shooting model is also action-oriented - that is "gun-like".

PES/WE AI is more varied and it does feel more "alive", because it moves at more varied patterns.
Also, PES/WE is more strategy oriented - there are less options to do someting yourself, you have to adjust to AI and keep passing your little straight passes and waiting for one of your little bug-teammates to move in better possition.
The poor AI is hidden by fast moving speeds. So you have to be on your toes all the time passing and passing and passing your little fake looking passes and moving your little bugies - and doing it all very fast.
That is all there is to PES/WE gameplay.
Shooting is better, because if you could shoot at FIFA's gun-speed - there would be no need for little fake-looking passes.

Goal saving feature is very good thing. It is a definite plus.

In conclusion - if you have a lot of patience, a lot of free time and very good imagination - then buy PES/WE.
You can pretend it is football and do the "little-fake-pass" dance, score the goal, save it and watch it from time to time. After the goal, get your patience and try to defend against "AI revenge".
Rinse and repeat.

However, if you don't have much time and are less inclined to imagine things - just get FIFA, play the action-shooter game and put it away after it gets boring.

In that case i think i,ll stick with the Action-Shooter, for now... LOL
For the reason that i actualy think that the gameplay is a more Truer reflection of the Real thing.

Yes the gameplay is still riddled with flaws, some of which, have been put right in the F*****g rip off, UCL game.
But when you get used to Fifa05,s gameplay and more importantly the First Touch and Skill system.
You can actualy see where the game has improved slightly, especially when you combine them with the thru ball & player Runs options.
Also with the introduction of ball & player physics (to a degree) to the game, is better too.
It seems to have made the gameplay a lot smoother than previous releases, but could still do with improving.

Same with the Cpu AI... They seemed to have made it more inteligent in some ways, as you can,t sprint through the middle or the wing so much as before.
As midfielders or defenders will close you down much quicker , block off runs or force you out wide. Especially in the higher game levels.
My main AI gripe, is that the cpu Attacks and goals can get too scripted, and your own players tend to loose the ability to tackle at times.

All in all, Fifa05 is a pretty decent game really, and only needless flaws in gameplay & Career mode, let it down...

well, regading FIFA - what gets to me after a while - is the same-ness. That is - the AI is so rigid - it repeats itself too often. So that human mind remembers all moves and after a while I just can't take it anymore. It is all same and same. Then if I return to the game in a week or so - it looks "fresh" for a while, and then again that same-ness get to me.

PES/WE - I just get tired from moving those tiny players at high speeds - and also find myself wishing for more actions - like play-run and first-touch. However, with PES just have to be patient ant wait for AI to do it all for you...
Shooting is better than FIFA, goal saving and replay - very good, though.

Basically - both games need major improvements.

And those PES/WE fans that hail that game as some kind of holy object - should tone down their retoric as that leads to the scewed image of the game to those that did not play it.
PES/WE is really far far far from perfect. It is not even close to being good.

This is why I say FIFA is better and more realistic. Soccer is the most action packed sport on the planet. Thus meaning that the video games should be action packed, not strategy packed as in PES. I enjoy reacting fast because thats how we do in real life. If I was to plan eveything when playing the ball would be taken from my grips in no time. About the A.I. your describing, maybe try the game at the harder levels, you can no longer expect the A.I. to do something. They can come out of nowhere and score just like you could. PES is a good game. I just don't understand why people think its the best thing on earth. Hell I can't even run PES4/WE8 in widescreen or in progressive scan. Hmph....Konami thats sad. I have to play it on a small TV, I can't even use my HDTV, and that is the better game. Even the dying PS2 allows this to be done with FIFA. I can see my players, since the field is wider and such.

Look at the ratings..and check which game gets more and better points.. every single website gives PES/WE a 9 or above..there must be a reason why PES/WE gets a high score year after year...correct ??

I`m telling you PES1 has better gameplay and overall it`s better than FIFA 05'...and 06'..and 07'' and so on...

You can`t compare Konami to EA..

If I dont know anything about PES/WE then why do I buy the games year end and year out. Which is more realistic is in user choice not what other say is more realistic. You think PES is more realistic and I think FIFA is more realistic. PES is not more realistic to me and that is a fact. It may not be to others but it is to me. I'm sorry but you PES/WE fanboys need to get off the fact of better ratings. Every time one of you brings that up, you should hold a neon sign above your head that says PES fanboy. Review scores don't mean Carlos crap to the majority except for ignorant people that only read the score and not the review. Also stop talking about how a PES game is going to be better than FIFA 06, 07, 08 and so on. You can not read the future and you have no idea what any of those games will be like. You and most other PES fans make a fanboy out of yourselves with those comments and then call FIFA fans the fanboys. Fanboy-a person with a serious complex over one thing dominating the other. Hmmmmm. I play PES/WE, as do I play FIFA and I never say one dominates the other. I say the one I like edges the other. ALL PES FANS are fanboys because they believe it is dominating over the other. They do not even give it a second chance. Like a SONY fanboy that refuses to play XBOX, PES fans refuse to play FIFA.

Hahaha, PES/WE overhyped? You guys are funny, there must be a reason why PES/WE gets al the points and credits it gets and deserves. It is because of the action that makes the game GOOD! It is because of the AI that makes the game PERFECT! In PES/WE you can score in every imaginable or realistic situation which you can think of, well that lacks in FIFA. If Konami promises a certain feature in a new PES/WE game, they keep their promises, EA lacks in that too. PES/WE is comming to get FIFA, each year more people buy the game, because they come to their senses. Every time you guys look for some small mistakes in PES/WE, which is very small if you compare it with Fifa. Almost every feature in PES/WE is better then Fifa's. The only reason why people buy fifa more is because of the commercials. They get more in touch with Fifa, because of the adverts.

I buy both FIFA and PES every year so whats "your" reasoning as to why I buy FIFA then? This was a bad example of aanything in regards to this thread. PES/WE is just as overhyped as HALO and HALO 2. PES is nowhere near light years ahead of FIFA and neither is FIFA light years ahead of PES. They both lack true simulation.

BTW...........I dont think I ever saw a commercial for FIFA in my life.

I've seen it quite often in Holland.. Thomas Buffel from FEyenoord and van der Vaart from ajax promoted it..

they'd kick a ball in an empty goal and then say "fifa 2005, it's in the game" or whatever the slogan was
