Yeah, Jervis Bay as a federal territory most Australians aren't even aware of. It's basically only there so that the federal government have a seaport - as Canberra is inland.

New South Wales is a funny name if you're not used to it. I guess bring born and raised here I don't question it. The name means new "south Wales" btw. So only one adjective, "new". Some people spread the misconception the south comes from them saying that as it's in the southern hemisphere. They're wrong.

Apparently the guy that discovered the east coast of Australia thought it looked like south Wales.

Not enough people in Australia to bother. And there is no gold in the Australian desert...

Our mining towns are random out posts, like Fresno, they just have populations of 10-30000 instead. Broken Hill, Mt Isa, Coober Pedy, Karratha, Kalgoorlie etc.
