Wireless Home Network

I posted this here because I'm hoping more people would read it since it's kind of urgent. Please move it if needed to....

Anyways, I just got a laptop for college and it has a wireless card. I got a wireless router for my desktop and I'm trying to transfer some files to my laptop. How exactly do I go about setting up this network, whether it be wireless or wired. The wireless internet connection works on my laptop, so I'm just trying to connect the two. I tried using Network Setup Wizard on both comp but nothing shows up in Network Neighborhood. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I only have about two days left.

I am not sure, but i think that maybe you need a wireless card for your desktop as well. My PC works only with a wire thourgh the modem and the wireless router, however my laptop that has a wireless card, works wireless.

Yeah, the wireless router is wired to my desktop as well , and the internet works on my laptop, except i can't get the two comps connected.

right,

1st of all you need ot make sure the 2 machines are in the same workgroup

this cna be done via the use of the network setup wizard

or right clicking on my computer, selecting properties

then going into network identification

if this is the case, then you need to make sure that you have a similar IP address assigned to each box, although this may be got around by your router having an inbuilt DHCP server (automayically assigns IP's)

for example on my network my desktop uses 192.168.1.1
whereas my laptop uses 192.168.1.2

you do not need to have the 2 machines wires together, transfers do work over 1 wired and 1 wirless connection
