I still remembered Manutd decided not to participate in the FA Cup just to play in the competition. (They were the defending champions that season) Reason was, they said that England would have a chance to hold the world cup if they won't.

I think there are 2 different championships you might be talking about...
one of them happens every year in Japan and is played between the Euro Champions League and the Copa Libertadores champions (Intercontinental Cup)... the other competition (which I think is the one you were referring to - World Club championship) happened only once featuring all champions of all continental competitions, in Brazil (Jan 2000) and Corinthians was the champions
FIFA said it would merge both competitions, and have it played in Japan featuring 6 clubs, South America and Europe champions receiving a bye into the semis, while the other continents would play a playoff to get through to the semis

Man Utd didn't play in the FA to play the World club championship, while Real played the intercontinental cup in 2002
