World Cup Injury Watch

Sevillista

Starting XI
Well, we're at that point in the season where major injuries could be devastating with the World Cup on the horizon. We've already had some players who are definitely missing the WC (Bosingwa, Owen, Anderson) and others who are likely to miss the WC due to injury (Cole, Pepe).

I've gotta believe that avoiding injury is in the corner of everybody's mind with only three months to go. Do you think it seriously affects how players are finishing out the season? Maybe they're avoiding fatigue as well?

This would be a good thread to discuss injuries as they occur and their impact on the end of the 2009/2010 season.

Hargreaves.

Essien will also be out for the season. I gotta say, it's the worst possible time ever for all of these injuries to come right now. Champions League on right now, plenty of title races around Europe and the World Cup coming soon, might drastically affect teams performance.

as much as players would like to never be injured, I'm sure they would take missing the latter period of the season if it meant that they would be fit and ready for the World Cup ... as a player, you'll get another chance next season for club glory, but the World Cup, if you're lucky, comes once in 4 years ... and as this World Cup is Africa's first, the support for the African teams (and the African players playing the Prem) will make it a unique event to participate in ... I'm sure Essien would trade missing the rest of the season with Chelsea for a chance to be fully fit to play in South Africa come June ...

That's obvious.

I would think so ... but reading your previous post, which claims that Essien's injury coming "right now" is at the "worst possible time", it was pretty clear that the obvious things I pointed out were apparently not obvious to you ...

"For all these injuries" Clearly you haven't understood and read my post properly, as I was referring to all injuries in general, not specifically on Essien's case.

this is getting boring ... I understand that you were stating a general case -- a point that was expanded from mentioning Essien's particular case ... I too mention a general case, and cite Essien as an example ... but the focus of my reply was about this being the "worst possible time" -- it is not ...

However, you make it sound as if I was specifically talking about only Essien at that point, which I was not. That is what I was referring to.

Not really a key player for Brazil to consider him an important lost!

Brazil has a lot of experienced players keen to replace Depor's Filipe Luis!

To bad for him that he missed the chance to make his debut with the Seleçao team!

Well, it's been a while.

Looks like Spain has had some unfortunate developments. Iniesta and Torres are both barely going to make it to the World Cup, so who knows what shape they'll be in. On top of that, today it comes out that Xavi is playing with an injury and if things get worse he won't be able to play in the World Cup. Imagine a Spain side without Xavi, Iniesta and Torres.

Also, Dragutinovic needs surgery and will not be able to play for Serbia in the World Cup. I feel absolutely gutted for him. He is a great footballer and the unofficial captain of Sevilla. The guy turned down huge salaries twice to stay with us, citing "there are more important things than money." Rare, nowadays.

Xavi Hernandez(Spain and Barcelona) could miss the tournament. His replacement would be Arsenal wonder-boy Francesc Fabregas.

Spain could play with Senna, Fabregas and Silva as midfielders assuming they play 4-3-3. Still a quality midfield.

Well, Spain play more of a 4-4-2. Usually Xavi, Iniesta, Senna and Silva in the midfield. It's quite a luxery having Fabregas as a backup (who is also barely making it to the World Cup...), but ideally we would have Xavi and Iniesta together... they're the best midfield duo in the world and the biggest reason Spain play so well as a team. If you start replacing the parts, I don't think we'll mesh as well, even though we've got quality backups.

If Xavi makes it you guys will be fine. You can play with Silva on the left, Fabregas on the right and Xaxi/Senna central midfield.

yeah you guys have quality backup players. That's why I think Brazil and Spain have the upper hand. Imagine England for instance missing Rooney.

So, not exactly an injury, but France will play this World Cup with Ribery, Benzema, and Govou all in the midst of a sex scandal for sleeping with this babe before she turned 18. I'm now convinced that they won't make it past the group stage.

Xavi won't miss the world cup and i wouldn't call Senna he's very unfit... Busquets and Alonso > Senna.
