Writing a paper on money in sports, have a few questions.

1) Are you guys for OR against salary/contract caps, spending big money on transfers.

2) If you are pro - why? con - why?

pro - better competition in leagues, lower ticket/merchendise prices, more money for club expenses such as stadiums, infastructure BUT always more for the owners.

con - what valid reasons against limiting this type spending?

3) Wanna use Chelsea as an example. What was the total they spend on transfers over those last 2 years. Wasn't it somewhere between 500,000,000? :)

Any other thoughts? Thx.

I don't see any reasons to have caps on the contracts, nor spending big money on players. But there should be some restrictions on how many a club can buy and use each season. That way the clubs would need to develope players and talents them selves and not just buy all the good ones from other clubs.
E.g. if you are a very talented youngster in Chelsea right now, it would be very, very, very hard to get into the first team.

I think Chelsea spent somewhere around €140,000,000 since Abramovic came. Now I might be wrong, but I think it's pretty close.

well, i have to disagree...if mourinho sees a top quality youngster, he's surely going to bring him to his first team...mourinho likes to 'build' a player...also, the players chelsea bought aren't worth the money they payed for them, but that's the way they are..stupid. oh, and the other teams obviously ask for more money because they now roman can aford it, so..

I'm all up for caps, it would be the only way clubs from countries like Portugal, Holland, France to reallistically compete with clubs from the "bigger".

The way this is going, by now clubs from Division 1 in England have a bigger budget and more buying power than Benfica for instance. It's insane.

as long as it's just benfica i dont care :p

lol, jus' kiddin, i actually agree with you..ther should be a limit..for instance, a couple of months ago people were saying that chelsea wanted adriano, and they were willing to pay €100mill for him...that's absolutely wacky as it is, but just think that someday someone would pay even more for a player, because 'if adriano is worth this much, then X is worth this much', know what i mean?
so i do think there should be limits to both transfer and contracts money.

You think salary is the only thing that has big stars moving from Ajax and the like to the big leagues?

I don't think so and I don't think a salary cap will prevent it from happening. It just gives bigger clubs more money to spend on players.

a cap would have to be on all money-stuff then. signing-on fee, transfer value, and salary. i dont know, it would benefit small teams, but at the same time take away some of the "prestige" of football.
