The demo offers the chance to play as seven teams, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, America (Mexico), NY Red Bulls, Manchester United, Marseille, and Bayern München:p

Shame they did not have Liverpool......;)

[PS3 Here]. The reason shooting is just not good it's because you rarely miss it wide or anything alike, it's just weak, or easily defended or it goes just a little beside the post.

I disagree with this, I have really screwed up some shots, sending them way off.

It's actually Inter and not AC Milan in the demo...

I REALLY hope that being able to take over control of your keeper isn't just for last-gen because keepers are COMPLETELY worthless on set pieces.

Put it this way, you better not give up a free kick that's within 25 yards of the goal because if you do it's GOING IN. I think I've given up 3 free kicks around the 20-25 yard range so far and all 3 have been put in. My keeper just stands there like an idiot and watches it sail in.

And whomever said that you can make your players run towards incoming passes must've gotten a different version of the demo! Because I sure as hell can't figure out how to make my guys run towards the ball.

Mixed feelings. Let's start with the good:

Physics - Realistic as can be
Graphics - Even better than UEFA, players look less shiny/plastic
Tricks - Awesome!
Detail - Warming ups, handshakes in the hallway and much more

Now the bad:

I bloody hate the new controls. I want select players with either the left trigger or the A button. There's actually a way to make that happen, but then you have the X and B buttons mixed up. I want to make my own control scheme.

Passing sucks. I mean, in order to pass it long you have to hold the button down longer, but it takes too long for it to charge and the ball will get taken from you.

Through balls, same story. Takes too long to charge.

Scoring is too difficult. Shooting charges up too quick and before you know it your shot will fly over the bar. That's a little bit too realistic for me. And that's with Ronaldinho. Can't imagine how hard it will be to score with a lower ranked player from my favourite Dutch team.

Goalkeepers make incredible saves, one after another. They dive towards the ball like they have rocketshoes or something. So when I finally manage to get a good shot, Mr. Superman catches the ball with both hand. No fingertip saves.

When I pass, the receiving player responds too slow and I can't make him really run towards the ball. Bollocks! Fanny hair! Balls!

I hope they will change this before the official release, but I doubt it.

Fifa 08 is now a simulation of Football and PES is an Arcade football game(not a bad thing)............

I don't care if you actually prefer FIFA over PES, but calling PES arcade is just nonsense , for crying out loud, half of fifa improvements are copied from PES. Should I point some out? The crossing times thingie, the cross on where the ball is gonna fall, the sprint style of turning only 45º when doing it, the shot feint thing, the through balls, selecting minitactics and using them easily in game, and some other stuff all came from PES and EA calls it the new controls or the new features (By the way you could be just one player in PES already, and that's since PES3) so don't you come and call PES an arcade game and FIFA the real deal, because that's bullcrap. Both games are fine but that right there that you said is just false.

I totally agree. I don't have more than those two issues and seems like I have to try moving towards the ball now...

I think it's bit off to say "PES is so much better" when there haven't been actual PES demo yet...

I have been reading previews from finnish game journalist and he is telling that PES game speed is too fast. Not saying it's arcade(which it obviously won't be quite sure), but it's too fast. If you are bashing FIFA because of demo how can you praise PES without playing the demo yet?

So far I have hear PES haven't evolved too well. Ie. gap between top players and "normal" players have been widened and top players shoot really hard even if they wouldn't be really "long shotters" in real life. So I really DO hope PES isn't going too arcade and too much about just top players... there is already too few teams/leagues, this wouldn't even more narrow time playing time and magnet of the gameplay.

when passing the ball just press towards the direction of the ball from the recieving player, because u take over the player recieving before the ball arrives to him, u actually have to move the player towards the ball...

well at least for me anyhow :P

Dang, you are totally right. It's better than automatic moving, this is getting better all the time...

Of course ,like I said I'm not trying to buy a war. I was just presenting you with the features that I think that FIFA got it right from PES, I'm not bashing FIFA like someone said. I'm just saying you can't call it arcade and have a lot of new features coming from that arcade game and suddenly fifa is the true simulation one.

Ok , but I can call PES arcade & Xbox 360 Fifa08 is NOW a simulation because it's my opinion and that's what I think...............I love them both equally for different reasons :D
We will just have to beg to differ wont we.......:)

Okay guys,

So, as the FIFA 08 demo is out and after playing 30+ half matches, I will write now my opinion sincerely and with all do respect to all other footy games out there.

I have been playing FIFA games since the Sega Mega Drive, and every year it was my pleasure to buy it, plug it in and play the game, not only for the fun of it, but for love that I have for Football, a.k.a soccer. Year after year I dreamt of having a football game that can satisfy me, my experience started from Winning Eleven when they introduced a different feeling to footy games, I then shifted to Winning Eleven, 180 degrees, ignoring all the years that I had live with EA’s FIFA series, simple because I’m a person who loves a game for its perfection and level of realism; I don’t care if I bought some game for all the money I have or not, I don’t even care if all the websites gave it a 10 out of 10, I only care for the fact that the game is “Real”, not gaming real, but Reality Real, I’ll explain this after minute.

So, I started the FIFA 08 demo; nice interface, as usual with all footy games, engaging interface, but this year EA had fresh feel filled with dynamic lines and techno shapes pumping your system up ever before starting the game!

As a start, EA had Ronaldinho waiting for me to test the game through his magic legs and skills; I was impressed by how the speed was reduced and momentum was fixed from FIFA 07, I tried some moves and immediately figured out that committing tricks has to be done by holding the “RT” (Xbox 360) button then doing some flicks with the right stick. I loved the moves, very real, very organic, feels cool and makes me want to wear some virtual cloths and start jumping like him! Hehe. It was a very successful addition by EA. Till here, all good.

I then went into choosing the team I’ll play with, so I chose Barca as my home team against Man. United CPU away team, I then fixed all editable settings and started the loading process.

Tata, the match starts, nice intro, better cinematics, more natural than acted out. I then release that the graphics are lowered down compared to UEFA’s graphics, I felt down a little, but hey I didn’t even try the game.
The referee starts the game and I pass the ball… I can’t remember anything for here!!!!

I went into a state of ecstasy, a trancy feeling that I have never ever had from a sports game ever. I couldn’t know what I was doing at that moment; was I playing a game, or was I at the field back at football stadium in my local town? But wait! that is Ronaldinho passing the ball, and that is Rooney pushing the defense, and that is Henry shooting! My god, this is a game!! It is not reality, is it?

I played a game after the other, passed the ball one time after the other, I couldn’t believe what I was experiencing, jumping up and down with ever ball touch.

The game was so real that I’m sure ever “gamer” out there is going to hate, but believe me people, this is the game that I always wished to have, always wished to play, always wished to experience.
People, I swear by everything that god has created; I have never ever seen anything as real as FIFA 08 this in all of my life, I always wanted something that real, but wasn’t excepting to have it in this life time!

My talk is not constructive or explains enough about the game, it is only to show my full respect for EA’s team this year… bravo you guys, and you have done “The” game that I waited for forever. Congratulations guys on taking footy game into a higher level, different, engaging and most importantly “Real”, so real that none of all of the PES or old FIFA titles players are going to be able to compare to them; as a matter of fact, no one is allowed to compare this game to any other title out there, NO, NO, NO.

Welcome FIFA 08 on Xbox 360 to my life, bye to all other titles including the current gen FIFA 08 and the current gen PES 2008 on Xbox 360 and PS3. :)

I wish if I can cry for this game, but I would be named as a freak or something. I love FIFA 08 next gen. I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT.

I swear to all what’ve god created that even if Mother Teresa herself comes to me and says that the game is not good, I will just ignore with a smile and say: “goodnight, happy dreaming about other stuff”.

Final words: FIFA 08 to FIFA 07 is like Sweets to Crap! enough said. :)

Theres a video where Bayern 'Monaco' and Marsille are playing. When the Bayern player passed it to another player, it was very weak. But what I noticed is that the player ran to the ball. Many people that have the demo are saying that they wait. What is happening?

They can't use controls(like I had problem). Players are running to ball if you are making them to move. It's not automatic, but you have to make that run.

I think most of ppl who have been critising controls etc. aren't just used time to really check out controls correctly.

Dude, trust me on this, FIFA 08 is "HARD" it is so challenging that you might hate it if you keep thinking that FIFA 08 is just like all the other football games where "stuff" happens automatically! I assure you that out of 30+ (40+ now) matches I've played this situation happened only once or twice, and it was my mistake.

Making a player run towards your passed ball is all manual now, To do a perfect pass on FIFA 08 you should plan out the following:

1. Make sure that the player is in a good spot.
2. Make sure no one is watching him.
3. Make sure no other player from the other team is watching him, because he might simply predict that you are going to pass the ball, hens jump into its path and cutting it.
4. Make sure that you are ready to push your player towards the ball; many people are talking about "basics" of football and how even kids learn that they should run towards a passed ball to get it, well, this happens in FIFA 08 but no anymore automatic all the time, "YOU" should grow up the kid in you and make him learn how to play "real" football.

FIFA 08 is the most realistic football game ever created, it so good that FIFA 07 and UEFA are just crap in front of it. The old titles were just betas compared to FIFA 08.

Everything in the new FIFA needs thinking and slow building, you must pass and pass so that you can break the defense of the opponent team.

Offense runs into open spaces way better than any game I've seen out there; no robotic runs, all stuff happens in real life speed.

FIFA 08 next gen is so real that it can NOT be compared to any old football title, you simply can't! no more saying stuff like "but in PES, bla bla bla" or "but in FIFA 07 bla bla bla".

Players actually "bump" into each other with real human force and gravity power, if you are defending and you run in the path of your defending partner you are simply going to knock him down with your forced body.

breaking through defense is REAL: meaning that only little are the times where you might run using one single player through 4 defenders.

This game is magic while in Demo, my god how it will be when it is in final form wit all the commentary plugged in and all the teams running!! OMG, I can't wait.

Shall I switch back to FIFA08?

I've been playing the DEMO for 2 days straight now and here are my thoughts.

Back in 2001 or so I switched full time to PES/WE and have been buying those games and renting FIFA and continually I've been more impressed with PES. I do miss the licensed teams, stadiums, leagues and cups but I found the gameplay to be much more organic than FIFA's which still felt stinted and not flowing as a true football game is.

I haven't played PES2008 yet, only seen video's but based on what I have seen so far I feel that FIFA2008 is actually making great gains in terms of gameplay on PES.

This weekend I watched a lot of European football on TV and I was actually quite surprised to find that the pace of the games and movement in the games seemed to more closely resemble what I had seen in the FIFA2008 demo rather than PES. I've heard a few coments on PES being more arcady than FIFA and I used to believe this wasn't true but following my revalations this weekend that may be the case.

Yes it plays slow but watch a real football game on TV. Players don't have turbo buttons and cannot turn 180 degree's on a dime. PES has managed to use an arcade style formula to simulate the 'flow' of a real football game. What FIFA seems to be attempting to do is to make the players themselves contribute to the flow of the game by giving them more real world momentum.

So far with FIFA2008 I've been very impressed. I still feel, even with the demo, the overall flow of the game needs to be tweaked slightly but it's getting very very close to a great game of football.

I compare what has happened this year with NHL2K8 and NHL08. The overall opinion is that NHL08 now seems to play a more simulation style game that NHL2K8 which is a complete turn around to what had happened over the last few years.

So it goes to show that EA can and do produce quality games and can meet the expectations of serious sports sim style gamers.

Hopefully they can do the same with FIFA2008 this year and I can switch back from PES to a more next-gen sim style game with 'FULL LICENSES' :)

Thanks for reading!!

reading these comments I can see how Fifa's gameplay this year has been completely revamped. I laughed when people said players just wait for the ball. Also when they said it takes to long to setup a long pass or long lob. When I first played the demo I realized how the pace and mechanics are almost spot on to real football in alot of ways. Alot of the scripting like players automatically moving to receive passes is gone. For former FIFA and PES players it will take alot of getting used to the gameplay mechanics. But without a doubt the physics and mechanics have overtaken PES.

And read the help with the controls. Its incredible how many new moves apart from dribbling that are in the game. Left and Right trigger are going to be your new best friends in FIFA 08. For cancelling runs or receiving passes or slow ball control. Its like whatever move I can think of in real football can be done in the game now, after reading the controls I was just using Ronaldinho to pull all kinds of moves, shots and dribbles. I have **** on EA for decades now but FIFA 08 and NA Live 08 have renewed my faith in them.
