if I get Winning Eleven 9 for PS2 and have a PS2 broadband adapter, can I play it against people who are using XBOX live? I know it sounds dumb, but I thought I once read something about cross-platform online gaming?

No, unless Konami host their online play in their servers. Which they don't.
