Your earliest football memory.

Big Daddy
What is the earliest memory you have of the beautiful game? Was it the moment that hooked you to it? was it of triumph, tragedy or even just mundane?

For me it was going to see Aldershot with my mum and dad, I was about five or six. I remember my Dad wanted to leave early in the second half (he was like that) I don't think I became full on football crazy until WC Italia 90, and the brilliant England team of Lineker, Gascoigne and Robson. After Italia 90 I began following United even more than I had before (I was always a United fan - but knew little about the game).

I was 6, watching Bulgaria in World Cup '94 with my family. I still remember when we beat Germany, the whole town was outside in the streets yelling their lungs out. (Y)

This Olympic tournament...I remember this game and the Argentina game but this game was the match that had everyone remembers so...

The emotion in Lagos was incredible I was only four and was celebrating even though I really did not know why beating Rivaldo,Ronaldo & Roberto Carlos was a big deal (H).
I had already been an Arsenal/Inter fan(I'm not one anymore :() fan and knew some football players but that was through video games and Panini...

In terms of following professional football, the first thing I remember was Juan Veron signing for Manchester United. I started following them around the 01/02 season, just by going to their website each week and checking the scores (didn't have cable or satellite, so no footie on TV for me). But I distinctly remember Veron signing and being annoyed that he took my squad number, because as a 12 year old I still had delusions that I might play for them some day...
Ironically, two years later, when I actually traveled to England for the first time, one of the two papers I brought back with me was a copy of the Sun with Veron's transfer to Chelsea as the headline. "Ranieri calls Veron 'the best in the world'" Yeah, right...

I was always into kicking the ball around when I was little, but I think my first memories of real football are from the 1998 World Cup. I was seven, and we watched almost every match that was available on our TV.

Starting XI
Sporting winning the Portuguese Cup in 1995 2-0 against Maritimo. I remember that game like yesterday :D. We won 2-0, two goals of Iordanov. Sporting played like hell in that time, and had great players, but couldn't win the championship, even with players like Figo, Balakov, Amunike, Juskowiak, Peixe, Oceano. That was a great team!

Euro 2000, which still remains as one of my all-time favorites. Especially Holland 6-1 Yugoslavia. This tournament made me love soccer even more. I had started playing around this time. But the sight of Netherlands beating France 3-2, who were a football powerhouse, made me thoroughly enjoy the game. In the semi's of the Euros, I had gone to a viewing party at my school where I watched NL miss two penalties during normal time and then lose on PK's. I still remember Jaap Stam blasting the PK over the bar.

BTW, I was born in Holland, hence my hardcore support of the Dutch team.

Euro 2000 is still one my fondest memories of football.

We apologize for keeping the yellow too long
Yellow Card
The Argentine national anthem blasting in the background as the TV camera panned across the Argentine starting XI. It was the opening game of Italia 90 and they were the defending champions.

Diego Armando Maradona was unable to play due to too many yellow cards....

World Cup 98/ Valencia - Hapoel Haifa a year or so later/Bayern-ManU. First tournie I 'watched'/first match I attended/first final I 'watched'. Didn't really like footie until a few years ago when I saw Chelsea wallop some relegated team right before Mourinho took over. Been a fan since.

But the first match I sat through from start to finish was Barcelona - Zaragoza 4-4 at Camp Nou. Barca came back from 2 down at injury time with a Rivaldo double. What a fantastic match that was.

'94 World Cup. Baggio skying the penalty.

I think that's mine too. I know I watched most of 94, but don't really remember anything concrete until Baggio's penalty going over the bar.

This goal.
I was in the stadium with my dad, and Marcelo Salas scored the goal that gave our team the first championship in 25 years. One of the single best moments of my life. I was 7 at the moment.

Well, It has to be in the Spring of 1997 when I visited Manchester and Old Trafford. I was 4 then. Didn't know anything about Football. Nothing at all. It is only when I came back and recollected my memories of that trip that I started following the game properly, in 2001-02. And I just had to support Manchester United because my uncle who lives in Manchester is a red Devil. So, I got the Red Genes from him. It increased as time passed on.

Talking about Indian Football, I got hooked on much later, when my Dad became a Club Official at East Bengal F.C, India's Most successful Club. This is when I attended a match at the 120,000+ seater Salt Lake Stadium. I was enamoured, and won over.

Football Is My Life Now..

1994 World Cup, Mexico playing Norway. Everyone watched the game. That was the first time I really followed it, and became hooked. Then I was disappointed that the World Cup was only every four years.
