New Screenshots and video released for PES 2011

Konami have released new screenshots and a video to elaborate on the improvements and new features that will be a part of PES 2011. From what we’ve been shown, it seems that Konami are keen to promote the changes made to the tactical side of the game, as well as an overhaul of the tricks and feints system.

The Managers A Fool. STREMER couldn't even run a bath!

On previous editions of pro evo, tricks have always been a little superfluous, and weren’t particularly effective in matches, despite looking neat. However, this year’s release allows players to link together tricks and feints, and the new video shows that the more skilled players will be able to carve apart defences with their dribbling prowess. This should mark a welcome change from the classic ‘give the ball to a quick player and run rings around everyone’ style that has been so effective in recent years, or the ‘give the ball to your strongest player and watch him outmuscle everyone’ manoeuvre that could kill off opponents in past editions.

Another new addition that may excite certain players is the introduction of a stadium editor. Players will now be able to design stadiums for their edited teams, and this should add a nice touch to the master league. From other screenshots we can see that the graphics have once again been updated, and as always, the new game looks as good as anything else on the market. That said, few people have had major complaints about the aesthetics of PES over the past few years.

Finally, in a recent press release, Konami have been trying to promote the fact that players will have greater control over matches. The introduction of a power gauge looks likely to enhance the game, and emphasis has been placed on the encouragement of free-flowing football. In the press release, Konami also revealed that the ‘Become a legend’ mode has been redesigned, and should be better this time around.

To summarise, it looks as if Konami have been listening, though hopefully they don’t go overboard on the effectiveness of tricks and feints. The gameplay of PES has often suffered due to the ease with which players can rip apart a team with just one or two players. The stadium editor looks nice, and the managerial updates should benefit the game. Hopefully team play will be encouraged, and the tactical changes will be useful. With the release of PES 2011 drawing ever closer, it looks like the game will be an improvement on last year’s effort. Let’s just hope that we can get our hands on a playtest sometime soon. Then we’ll know just how much of Konami’s hard work has been worthwhile.
