Graphical improvements made for PES2011

Written by Ian on Thursday, 3 June 20105 Comments

Konami have released some early screenshots of PES2011, and it must be said that the graphics are looking slicker than ever. The aesthetics of PES2010 were very good, but when compared to the snippets of the new game seem to be a clear second best. The screenshots not only demonstrate how shadows, shirt ripple effects, and facial detail have improved, but also demonstrate new features and facets of the game play.

For instance, there will be a new speed blur effect on Pro Evo, which I’m guessing is triggered by the fancy footwork and changes of direction made by the quicker players. This looks interesting, though we’re yet to see whether or not it adds anything to the feel of the game, or if it’s merely intended as a pleasant gimmick.

Also, a screenshot of one of the stadiums has emerged, though this picture clearly reflected a work in progress. Early signs are promising, but the finished product will not be with us for some time. Although this is all well and good, the significant alterations to Pro Evo are far more obvious in the final screenshot available to us.

This screenshot shows a power bar near a Barcelona players foot, demonstrating that passes will have to be more measured in PES2011, and that accurate passing can no longer be expected without some form of skillful input from the player. The power bar has been executed neatly, and doesn’t look like it will interfere with gameplay in a negative way. Finally, the in-match interface looks like it’s been revamped. This also looks smart, if a little basic. However, these shots are only previews, and don’t necessarily reflect the game’s eventual appearance.

The changes appear to be positive, which gives us all reason to be a little bit cheerful. However, the graphics are not really the problem with Pro Evo at the moment. Scripted gameplay, lack of realism, and the one-man-team syndrome are the serious issues that need to be addressed. Still, for what it’s worth, PES2011 looks like it will be easy on the eye, and the developers appear to have succeeded so far in this respect.
