Blinders & Blunders: Diego Forlan
Over the next few days, I will be retrospectively be looking at some Blinders & Blunders from the World Cup
2010, to add to the several that have been highlighted throughout the tournament. Hopefully this will leave us with the poll to decide which factor or event would best act as the defining moment or individual of the the competition. Quite simply, Diego Forlan has had a fantastic seven games, and shown a quality in long range shooting unseen by many of the tournaments big names. For fans of the English Premier League, who don’t watch La Liga, Forlan was seen as a bit of a joke at Manchester United, as a player who came with a huge reputation but couldn’t hit a barn door. Upon moving ot Villareal in Spain, Forlan found his form, and has become one of the most prolific strikers in both La Liga and Europe first for the Yellow Submarine, and then more recently for Atheltico Madrid, striking up a superb partnership with Aguero.
Coming in to the 2010 World Cup, many would have seen Uruguay as an also ran, with the last 16 being seen as a realistic conclusion to their competition at the very latest. However, a combination of solid defensive play, aggressive but fair competitive midfielders and the brilliant of Forlan mixed with Suarez’s enthusiasm up front has seen a surge through to the final four, and an excellent showing in the 3rd v. 4th place game against Germany. Forlan has managed 5 goals, four of which have been superb strikes combining technique and control with power and swerve, all with a ball that is ‘impossibe’ to control. His dead ball delivery has been excellent throughout and whether playing as one of the front two, or just behind the forwards as a support striker, his work rate and commitment has been second to none. Rumours persist of Forlan returning to England in the next transfer window, and following his performances in South Africa, and indeed in the Europa League before it, there are very few clubs in the world that would not convert his signature.

thanks alot
