Good Week / Bad Week
At this time of the season, Good Week / Bad Week becomes a tiny bit more predictable. Every little incident becomes intensly looked at by the media and the fans, and therefore by the time it gets to Monday, most issues have been talked to death. I fully intend to carry Good Week / Bad Week on over the World Cup, albeit in a slightly different format. With the Championship season ended, I should also give a special shout out to Blackpool, who made the playoffs, a huge achievement for a club of that stature in the modern game!
Good Week - Jose Mourinho
I reckon it is probably a good week every week if you are the special one. In fact there are very few times a
team gets to the Champion’s League final and the manager is the image on the back of every newspaper. But Jose managed to stop Barcelona reaching a second successive final, and by doing so denied them a chance to win the trophy at the home of Real Madrid. With rumours persisting that Mourinho may end up managing Real come August, that little detail has probably just about given Jose a blank check to name his price. It wasn’t attractive at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, and the purists may not have enjoyed the quality of football on show. But the facts are that Inter had to defend well, and they put on a masterclass, stopping the best player in the world in the process. Mourinho may be arrogant, he may be cocky, but his is exceptionally good at what he does, and is 90 minutes away from a second Champion’s League title. There are very few clubs that wouldn’t want him as their manager.
Bad Week - Steven Gerrard
He may be one of the most influencial players in world football, and he may just be one of Liverpools all time greatest, but this week, Stevie G probably would like to forget. After two infamous backpasses against Arsenal and France is 2004, Gerrard managed to misread the situation against Chelsea on Sunday, and threaded in the lethal Drogba, who scored what proved to be a crucial goal at a time when Liverpool were on top. Four days before, Athletico Madrid shot down Gerrards Liverpool, knocking them out of the one piece of silverware they seemed odds on to win, especially with Fulham waiting in the final. It may be harsh to expect Gerrard to produce some European magic and to never make mistakes in big domestic games, but this week, it has all seemed to come at once. Putting this week behind him ahead of the world cup is vital for English hopes!
