I enjoy playing FIFA 16 in "Manager Mode," just simulating and watching CPU vs. CPU matches. However, I decided to create a fully fictitious database while trying to respect the teams' relative strengths and incorporating some randomness.
Currently, I'm engaging with the 1991-92 season (not in Career Mode, as it would crash, but in Tournament Mode) and aim for historical accuracy without being obsessive (for instance, adopting 3 points for a win and allowing 3 subs per team, etc.). I will post some results here.
I am now tackling the 1991-92 European Cup, but I'm playing it in a 16-team Champions League format, complete with group phases and knockout rounds starting from the quarterfinals.
The groups are:
A: Sampdoria, Club Brugge, Austria Wien, Real Madrid
B: Arsenal, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Espanyol, Celtic
C: Internazionale, Sparta Praha, Bordeaux, Eintracht Braunschweig
D: Bayern München, Benfica, Liverpool, Ajax
MATCHDAY 1 results:
Sampdoria vs. Austria Wien 0-3
Real Madrid vs. Club Brugge 3-1
Arsenal vs. Espanyol 1-0
Celtic vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-1
Internazionale vs. Bordeaux 2-2
Eintracht Braunschweig vs. Sparta Praha 2-1
Bayern München vs. Liverpool 3-0
Ajax vs. Benfica 1-0
After each round, I'll play a few matches, simulate the others, and post pictures and a report.
Arsenal got off to a good start in their Champions League campaign with a narrow win over a surprising Espanyol side. Left-winger Kevin Ainley expertly controlled the ball and coolly drove it past Espanyol's star goalkeeper António Auria to score the game's only goal (photo). Espanyol, Spain's runners-up from last season, gave an impressive performance, outshooting Arsenal even as visitors, with a tally of 6-5. Unfortunately for them, they will return to Catalonia without any points. David Tofi had a great opportunity in injury time, but his curled shot went just wide of the post.
