FIFA 16 Fictional Universe - The 1991-92 season

I enjoy playing FIFA 16 in "Manager Mode," just simulating and watching CPU vs. CPU matches. However, I decided to create a fully fictitious database while trying to respect the teams' relative strengths and incorporating some randomness.

Currently, I'm engaging with the 1991-92 season (not in Career Mode, as it would crash, but in Tournament Mode) and aim for historical accuracy without being obsessive (for instance, adopting 3 points for a win and allowing 3 subs per team, etc.). I will post some results here.

I am now tackling the 1991-92 European Cup, but I'm playing it in a 16-team Champions League format, complete with group phases and knockout rounds starting from the quarterfinals.

The groups are:
A: Sampdoria, Club Brugge, Austria Wien, Real Madrid
B: Arsenal, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Espanyol, Celtic
C: Internazionale, Sparta Praha, Bordeaux, Eintracht Braunschweig
D: Bayern München, Benfica, Liverpool, Ajax

MATCHDAY 1 results:
Sampdoria vs. Austria Wien 0-3
Real Madrid vs. Club Brugge 3-1
Arsenal vs. Espanyol 1-0
Celtic vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-1
Internazionale vs. Bordeaux 2-2
Eintracht Braunschweig vs. Sparta Praha 2-1
Bayern München vs. Liverpool 3-0
Ajax vs. Benfica 1-0

After each round, I'll play a few matches, simulate the others, and post pictures and a report.

Arsenal got off to a good start in their Champions League campaign with a narrow win over a surprising Espanyol side. Left-winger Kevin Ainley expertly controlled the ball and coolly drove it past Espanyol's star goalkeeper António Auria to score the game's only goal (photo). Espanyol, Spain's runners-up from last season, gave an impressive performance, outshooting Arsenal even as visitors, with a tally of 6-5. Unfortunately for them, they will return to Catalonia without any points. David Tofi had a great opportunity in injury time, but his curled shot went just wide of the post.

Internazionale leveraged their superior experience to secure a comfortable 2-0 victory over Eintracht in Braunschweig, thus taking the top spot in Group C. Despite Eintracht's early control, the Italians methodically asserted their dominance as the match progressed. The deadlock was eventually broken in the 66th minute when Portuguese star Jorge Ribeiro seized upon a mix-up between left-back Jörg Dreschler and goalkeeper Paul Çatal (pictured) to notch the first goal. Right-winger Alberto Conforti later widened the lead eight minutes from time.

Titleholders Bayern demonstrated why they are considered the favorites for the championship, effortlessly securing a 2-0 victory over Benfica on a fog-enshrouded evening at the Olympic Stadium. Nuri Erkan, Bayern's premier star, dazzled yet again, netting both of Bayern's goals — one at each end of the first half (pictured). Evidence of the Germans' supremacy was underscored by English goalkeeper David Ellam being named man of the match, owing to a series of remarkable saves. Despite showing improvement in the second half, Benfica was unable to capitalize on a few chances.

Real Madrid will undoubtedly feel a sense of missed opportunity after returning from Bruges with only a draw against a resolute Club Brugge side. The Belgian champions held their ground to secure a 1-1 draw. Josep Zaragoza notched the goal for Real Madrid, capitalizing on a rebound (pictured) after goalkeeper Fernand Ngouma deflected his penalty kick onto the post. Despite the result, the Spanish champions remain well-positioned to advance to the quarterfinals.

Although Real Madrid dominated the game for extended periods, Brugge carved out a few chances to level the scores in the second half, notably when Christophe Reniers missed from close range in the 67th minute. Madrid's goalkeeper Jordi Gonales repeatedly denied Brugge, with his remarkable saves earning him the Man of the Match accolade. However, Gonales couldn't keep out Michel De Bondt's equalizing strike nine minutes from the end. Only minutes earlier, Swiss international Claude Nansoz was thwarted by the woodwork – a shot that, had it gone in, could have extended Real's lead to a decisive two goals. German referee Florian Sauer confirmed the ball had not fully crossed the line, keeping the match delicately balanced until the final whistle.
