Here is what jim said:

ok, make the big bmp, reduce to 256 colours in psp\fireworks
cut and paste three chunks to make your 3 bmps of 512x256 to insert into gfx studio
open the afs, navigate to spike_ee, then open bmp1 (2 bright green areas and 1 boot in the far right), set palette opaque (click on black box, then set green to 0% and make it 0,0,0 with rgb sliders). left drag over the first boot, right drag over the first palette slot. DO NOT touch transparency again, you might get a transparent pic warning this is fine.
left drag 1st bmp back from slot1 (now it is all grey) and save as slot1.bmp or similar.
open your slot 2 bmp left drag into place and repeat for slot 3, they will go grey and might look strange.
open your slot1.bmp in psp and paste the 2 editables in, then open this new bmp in gfx studio and left drag into place.
then export each of the bmps in turn and drag into place in spike_gs Job done.
