I have been reading these forums for a little while with much interest. I have been a dedicated FIFA player since the first version, and I never thought I would find a better football game, but I have given up on FIFA and switched to PES. I had been getting frustrated with FIFA for quite some time and the reason is this: game play. The following comments that I am going to make all talk about game play - talk about graphics, fan chants, stadiums, etc - these are all superficial things when compared to the actual game play. When it comes down to the actual game on the field, PES outstrips FIFA - totally eclipses it.
PES has the feel and rhythm of a real game of football. It has more depth. You can tell that the people who made it are real football fans. Things like staying goal side of the man, retaining possesion, passing, these are all important factors in PES.
In FIFA your main striker will score over 50% of your teams goals! That in itself shows how shallow the game is. In FIFA you learn the tricks to win then just keep doing them over again. In PES the emphasis on learning techniques and mastering them, and a player can develop their own style of play. In FIFA there is only one way to play.
EA Sports have been under performing with the FIFA series since about 2000 in my opinion.
Another thing that really annoys me is the options for custom tournaments - in every version you should be able to create your own tournaments - this should be a given. You should be able to have as many human players as you want. FIFA's continuing screwing around with this is just so annoying.
The last version I played was FIFA 2004, - and the options for tournament play totally sucked. You could only play these lame knockout tournaments. I had some mates over and we wanted to create a league with all of us in it plus a few CPU teams. WE COULD NOT DO IT. In the end we played all our games in friendly mode and tallied up the tables with paper and pencil. That is just pathetic.
FIFA is dead - Long live PES the new King I say.
