Career Mode Must be Brand New

I'm finishing up my second year with Madrid, sixth year overall. And I'm bored with career mode. The main problem is the financial system. Your players are basically slaves: you buy them, use them until you want to sell them, or they retire. Thus they are a one time investment: you get enough money for Adriano, you've got Adriano for life, and regardless of how well he performs or how long he's "under contract," he'll never cost you another dime. The problem this creates is that eventually you will have too much money. I've got enough money to buy a 90+ player for Madrid but I have 90+ players at virtually every position. It feels pretty pointless to have someone like Joe Cole as a back-up midfielder.

Compouding this problem is the poorness of the recruitment system. The boring part of the career in 2004 is that you knew exactly who you should go after. There was no point in spending effort scanning the smaller divisions and countries for up-and-comers. The problem still exists in 2005 because the replacements are carbon copies of the players they replace. So sure, now I'm buying Sebastien Trezeguet instead of Robert Pires, but I'm still only looking at the Premiership, Bundesliga 1, Serie A, and La Liga to find my talent. Should you get a replacement player, his playing time does not seem to be linked to his rate of improvement. Since there is so much money to be had in the game, especially as you build up your finance coach, there is virtually no incentive to build up these young players anyway. I know I've got a future star in Jose Gomes Fofonka, R. Carlos' replacement. But there isn't much point in playing him to build him up, when I can buy Ashley Cole at LB, play him for a few years, then sell him for more than what I bought him for even though he'll be on the verge of retirement.

So you sell your geriatric players, raid the other major leagues of all their promising talent, they do nothing to stop you, and you become an invincible superpower. As I've said, I've grown bored with Madrid, but I've already bought the interesting young talent from Arsenal, Man U, AC Milan, and the other giants, who have done little or nothing in the way of new acquisitions. Where's the fun? Besides, I know Madrid will be an unstoppable juggernaut when I have to face them in the CL thanks to my leadership. Bolton sure was.

EA has got to revamp career mode. First, when players retire, it should not automatically replace them with clones. I believe you should have to build up your youth system, and court prospects as in NCAA football. Other players should be generated for other teams based on the country they play in. That way, a lot of great young players will be coming out of Brazil, and part of the fun will be checking out the Brazilian leagues to see who is on the rise. However, the odd exceptional talent will come out of Denmark or the U.S. or Turkey so you'll have to peruse the entire world so you don't miss out on the next Eidur Gudjohnsen or Freddie Adu. Old players must rapidly decrease in value, since they aren't worth 36,000 points to a club if they won't get more than a few games out of them. And there must a contract system, where you will have to raise wages for stellar performers, and can get cut rates for players not performing up to snuff. This will open up the possibility for free agency, which will be a great way for lower-level clubs to pick up fallen stars on free transfers, as in real life.

What do you think?
