FIFA 2003 (PC) Control Issue

Hi

Please can someone help me with a Control issue on the PC version of FIFA 2003.
It involves the Freestyle Control movement - apparently this is achieved by pressing "Z" together with "a direction". I currently use a "Maxfire Digital Gamepad G08" and all other controls work fine. For some reason, keypad "Z" does not want to work, for example I also cannot bend the ball on freekicks, achieved by pressing "Z" together with the directional keypad right?

So, I have changed the pass button to "Z" on the configurarion to see if it recognises my gamepad, and it DOES. This leads me to believe that maybe I have a problem with the game itself. Furthermore, on the keypad configuration setting, I have no option to re-configure the "freestyle control" - is this the same with anyone else....all I have is "Pass/Switch Player", "Lob/Tackle", "Shoot/Tackle", "Header/ThroughBalls/Goalkeeper" and "Playerruns"...five buttons not six...

Does anybody think if I purchase the Sidewinder this problem will disappear o is the problem more indepth?

Many thanks to anyone who repsonds.
Sorry for going on so long!

Same problem - sort of

I have a usb adapter so i can use my gamecube controller on my pc. The little yellow joystick is always aligned wrongly which would not be a problem but fifa 2003 makes it the skill control. When i try to run with the ball it just does skill. Is their a menu edit that would allow me to un asign the yellow joy stick as skill?

Exactly mate, there doesn't appear to be a re-configure option for the Freestyle Control... you cannot assign another button except "Shift/Button Z" it appears.... yet you can assign every other function.

Can anyone else shed the light on this, now our problem?

Thanks in advance.

try the following solutions if it works or not
(This is for Logitech WingMan Action Pad)
try to modify to fit your gamepad

METHOD 1

a. Edit your config.dat which is in

C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\FIFA 2003\data\system
with notepad

b. the last line shows :-

"MP-8866 Dual USB Joypad" 12 "MP-8866 Dual USB Joypad" 12 4 3 2 1 7 8 5 6 9 10 11 12

Replace that line with :-

"Logitech WingMan Action Pad " 9 "Logitech WingMan Action Pad" 9 1 2 3 6 4 8 7 10 9 5

c. Delete the file My Documents\Fifa 2003\user\FIFA2003. and config.dat
This resets everything and uses the new pad settings.
**** Note that it will default all your game settings too ****

d. Run fifa and you should be fine. The 'Y' button performs special moves
and whilst held down during a free-kick it allows you to add spin to the ball,
by moving the D-pad (Arrows).

e. If the patch is successful, you can see the My Documents\Fifa 2003\user\config.dat
"YES Logitech WingMan Action Pad"

My above config sets the buttons to :-

A - Lob
B - Quick Pass
C - Shoot
X - Through Ball
Y - Special Move/Curl a freee kick
Z - CPU Run
R - Run

This is stated by one of the member, you can have a try, if not,
try the universal method below :

METHOD 2

a. run regedit goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\MediaProperties
\Joysticks\OEM, edit and find "Logitech WingMan Action Pad"
you should find in one of the folder somelike VID04B$&PID...
replace the OEMName with one of the Gamepad found in
config.dat
e.g SideWinder Gamepad USB version 1.0 or
Logitech .....

original OEMName : Logitech WingMan Action Pad Gamepad
new OEMName : SideWinder Gamepad USB version 1.0

c. if you want to customize the player's key, just edit the config.dat as in e.

d. Delete the file My Documents\Fifa 2003\user\FIFA2003. and config.dat
This resets everything and uses the new pad settings.
**** Note that it will default all your game settings too ****

e. original config.dat
"SideWinder Gamepad Pro USB version 1.0" 9 "SideWinder Gamepad Pro USB version 1.0"
9 1 2 3 4 5 8 7 10 9 6

the format is button#,n1,n2,n3........n10
button# = no. of button for your gamepad
n1 - n10 = button no.
value in n1 - n10 = action key for game

n1 = 1 (lob/slide)
n2 = 2 (pass ball)
n3 = 3 (shoot)
n4 = 4 (call other players run)
n5 = 5 (Straight ball/header)
n6 = 8 (special move/curled free kick with arrow or D-pad)
n8 = 10 (esc)
n10 = 6 (player run)

suppose that you want to change the ESC key with the Lob one.
(ESC key is 10 in button 8, lob is 1 in button 1)
change button 1 value to 10 and button 8 value to 1

After:
"SideWinder Gamepad Pro USB version 1.0" 9 "SideWinder Gamepad Pro USB version 1.0"
9 10 2 3 4 5 8 7 1 9 6

****the button sequence might be varied with different gamepad ****

hope it can help you

Spot on mate!
All works fantastically well now! When you first do the Zidane trick, it's pure bliss!

Thanks so much!

you may find your gamepad in the START-->CONTROL PANEL-->
JOYSTICK e.g. it is "Logitech WingMan Action Pad"

then follows the METHOD II, replace the gamepad name and customerize the buttons
