HELP!!! Defending headers off corners.

HELP!
Anytime I play FIFA 99 against the computer and the computer is taking a corner kick, it seems to be able to easily kick the ball perfectly to the head of one of its players who's standing right in front of my goal, who effortlessly heads it into the back of the net with my goalkeeper totally helpless to do anything about it. (Or at least that's how Motson describes him. *laughs*)
I do all the standard things to defend against this, as I would (including placing a defender in front of the person receiving the ball and holding the appropriate button down, to head it away out of danger) but nothing seems to work!
So I have 2 questions:
1) How on earth do I effectively defend against this?
2) Is there anyway I can duplicate this move on OFFENSE? I'd like to try this against regular players. It seems to be a very devastating offensive set piece off corners.
Oh, and I'm using a Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad, if this matters.
Thanks in advance, Tom

Its a matter of catch me if you can, when the corner swings into the area, remember that
the cpu team will randomly pick any player
that is in the area, you can mark attackers,
but it is hard to predict what attacking
player the ball will go to, its one of the
hardest things to defend against,
when you see the ball coming in towards
the attackers, try to move a defender in
to meet the ball and go for it... if you
do manage to head the ball clear, press the
M button on the Gamepad to quickly change
the IGM to attacking formation, this way its a fast counter move that can quickly eliminate the threat in your own defensive
area to a fast and lethal counter attack...
another option is to go into the practice
park and defend against corners, this way
you will get some idea on how the cpu sets
up the play, it is just the same in general
gameplay.....
And it does matter about the SIdewinder, they
are SUPERB for this game, once configured you
can pull off some super moves/goals etc..
Hope you can work it out and score a few
screamers....Robbo

Robbo,
Thanks for replying, but I've GOT to believe there's more to it than just "catch me if you can". I mean, I've played FIFA 99 since its release date and I can do just about ANYTHING except defend this move (or duplicate it on offense). There's never any problem with me defending players that are far enough out of the box.
What kills me are the corners that are swung in tightly towards goal. I mean, it ALWAYS hits their player's head and it's a goal! I can't blame the keeper, because it'll go right in the net. (He couldn't possibly have time to react.) Oh, and forcing the keeper to come out of the net doesn't work either, because it doesn't force him to catch the ball or even punch it away!
Has ANYONE had ANY success defending headers off corners??? I've lost MANY a shutout because of these, but I'd be furious if I lost a game in overtime because of it!
Thanks in advance, Tom

MMM, I have had around a 70% success rate by
moving defenders onto the oncoming cross, do it by using the Y button <Run> plus the direction pad on the gamepad , then the respective buttons to head the ball clear,
must use fast button actions to pull it off.
it's the short corners that i can never pick up, they come in fast and the ball is in the net before you can react. It's one of the games wildcards,
.."expect the unexpected" so to speak..
The easiest way to score FROM a corner is to
send the ball into the near post area around
the edge of the 6 yards box, must have a player close enough to pick the ball up and turn and shoot, usually works 80% of the time..I have managed to score from just about
every part of the penalty area from balls sent in via corners, also missed quite a lot too. This is one of the attractions of the game due to it being so unpredictable..

Would like to hear from other players on how they contend with corners...

Well i think it's also the way the computer reacts on different PC's or the skill level, i play on Proffesional, mainly in custum champion league value cups or either Italian or Spanish championship, & i hardly recieve any goals, like 1-4 goals in a 32 teams knockout only cup. & also i don't recieve goals from corners at all, very rare, when the pc kicks the corner, i press "S" so that the pc selects a defender & then if the ball is near him i get it with the "D" button if not i press S till i get the closest defender to the ball & then get it with D & clear away or pass.

The computer usually has a player on the near
side of the post and one on the far side of the post, so what I do is place the defender
that I control in the middle so I can get to
either and disrupt the rythim of any potential header. Once the guy who is taking
the corner makes contact with the ball, it is
up to you to anticipate where the ball is going. The CPU player on the near side of the
post is more dangerous becauuse he's closer to the goal and gives your keeper less reaction time to work with if he makes contact. The guy on the far post is also
dangerous because his headers are coming from
further and have an angle on the keeper. The key to do is to get your defender in position in front of the guy taking the header. This seems to cuse the CPU the most problems. Having said all of this - there really is no
sure way of defending a header. It may be a bug / cheap goal correction mechanism that
allows the CPU to catch up with you when you're beating it. I would say that the computer scores on 20-25% of it's headers against me.

I just want to get something clear. On my Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad, exactly which button am I supposed to hold down to defend against these wicked headers? (A or C)
I've checked with other people online and basically I get 2 types of responses:
"There's nothing you can do. Just deal with it."
-OR-
"I never get this problem."
Well, I can tell you that I've ALWAYS had this problem, at all skill levels. I can also tell you that I firmly believe there are some expert FIFA 99'ers out there who can defend this.
I do believe these headers are efforts by the computer to REALLY test a player, especially on corners swung in tightly to the far post (I always play television view) and those are terribly devastating.
The ball just comes at you and you don't even SEE the offensive player until the ball strikes his head and is in the back of the net.
It's uncanny how perfectly struck the ball is off these corners and how it's exactly at the right height to hit the head of the offensive player.
I've NEVER been able to be that perfect off my own corners.
Like I said earlier, I don't worry about this problem with corners that are swung out wide into the box (I EXPECT, no, DEMAND my keeper stop those) but those damn corners that swing in real TIGHT towards goal.
Anyways, further replies and clarification would be welcome...

yep, it certainly is uncanny how the computer
players win most of the corners, its the way
the game has been programmed to test all
players, annoying to say the least, but we
have to contend with it...
Its very hard to work out exactly where to
position your own defenders, due to the fact
of the computer being able to select players
on a random basis...
Now the buttons you use are either the A or C
buttons, they both work quite efficiently
so long as you have a player in the position
to get his head to the ball.<Not easy> use
either of theses two buttons along with the
direction pad when required...
someimes the ball drops to your feet, thats ok, have to be quick to clear it. if the ball
goes over your highlighted player and he cant
get to it, the next best option is to press
any of the two mentioned buttons and hope
the next defender in line can win the ball.
If not another goal flies into the net.
Will never be 100% with any method you
use, the game doesn't allow it...

Well well... For test97, I've only played FIFA 1999 for about a month now and this is a sintch... I also have a MS gamepad so here are some of my tips:

[1] When the comp. gets a corner always try to move whatever player in the middle (or around) the goal box. Standing on that white dot will help you remember sometimes.
[2] The second the corner is kicks move towards the direction of the opposing goal (or where the ball is heading) and before it hits the ground hit the 'C' button (Shoot button/ and 'C' for keyboarders)
[3] Rapidly tap the buttons and keep pointing the direction of your selected player to the opposing goal so that way he/they can easily clear it.
[4] Once cleared (depeding on your current IGM) one of your other players should be on the offensive and near they ball. Quickly select him and make a dash for the goal (Since no defenders are there)
[5] Moment of truth. Keep running in a rythmic way (Tap like 1,2,3, and a 1,2,3... get it)This will kepp your player faster and less fatigued. By the time you reach the goal and the d-pad slightly in any direction and its sure to be a goal!

This works for me 90% of the time... really, Just to let you know, I consider myself and expert player in any game a play for a certain period.

Peace and good luck!
PS- Could someone read my posts, I need help with the ASF files and WAV conversion...
