Soccer team attacked after losing match, several injured
December 7, 1999
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - Several members of a top soccer team were injured when
stick-swinging hooligans ambushed the team bus on its return from a loss in the title
game of Jordan's premier league, a newspaper reported today.
Al Arab Al Youm said the attack occurred Monday when the Al Wihdat team was
returning to the capital from the northern town of Irbid after losing to Al Faisali,
Jordan's second-ranked team.
Four people were arrested, the newspaper said.
The bus was forced to stop by a car blocking the road, and hooligans waiting nearby
hurled stones at the vehicle, the newspaper said. The attackers armed with sticks
then boarded the bus and hit the players as they tried to hide under the seats.
The newspaper said one player was hospitalized in an unconscious state and two
others were under observation in the hospital. The rest were treated for minor
injuries and discharged.
