MLS Cup 99

Well... as much as I enjoyed most of the MLS playoffs, and as much as I have defended the league on these bulletin boards, I have to say that that Cup Final today was really a stinker.

My first complaint is to whoever decided to hold the match in New England in late November...
The pitch was atrocious!!!!
Absolutely second rate.
To play the final on a pitch with NFL graphics on it was unfortunate. When there are such better stadiums in the league and elsewhere, why use such a bad one?

The game itself was shaped by the pitch size (small) and the huge divots up and down the center from the New England Patriots.
DC deserved to win, but it's sad their victory came on such cheap goals.
I feel for Kevin Hartmann. He's generally a fine keeper, but that's got to be the gaff of the year.
The first goal was also a result of the ball skipping up on an attempted clear by Caligiuri.
Lassiter had a number of opportunities he should have finished and didn't.
Cobi Jones seemed alone every time he touched the ball... and what's he doing so close to the center of the pitch... especially that one!
Fine match from Llamosa, but where were LA's other options?
Mathis was invisible.
Cienfuegos.... did he play? (sarcasm)
Hermosillo seemed stationary most of the time.

Too bad for Fraser, but I don't think it would have made much difference.

About the only bright spots in the match were the play of Ben Olsen (I'm amazed no Euro club has snapped him up yet.)and the interplay of Etcheverry and Moreno on a few occassions.
Llamosa and Agoos did a solid job. I thought Pope looked a bit vulnerable from time to time, but they didn't test him much.
Congratulations to DC United, but it's a shame it wasn't a better played match.
Such a let down after those great semifinal series.

Incidently, I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but what's with the garbage half time show? If I want that I'll watch the Orange Bowl.
That little Genie in the Bottle junk was pitiful.
I've never understood why anyone wants to watch some little pop singer lip sync with cheezy dancers and terrible choreography surrounding.
I guess ABC doesn't have a decent analyst to teach the American public with some tactical analysis.
