The first match approached, and Ristic called in a few days before the match with a cold. So he was replaced with Zechner in the first game.
I signed Belarusian coach Vladamir Dremov, and he arrived at the training grounds on Friday with an interpreter until he learns German.

The trip south to Unterhaching, just outside of Munich, was a long one. It was the first official match of the season, and for many of the players it was the first official match in Union's colours. You could sense a feeling of anticipation, of worry and of excitment in the team bus for the length of the trip. We arrived on Saturday afternoon, with the team under strict orders not to stay up late and to be at the training field at 10am the next day for a final training session.

Second Division, First Round v Unterhaching (Away) 27-07-2001
Beuckert, Menze(c), Ernemann (Kozak 30), West, Kremenliev, Nikol, Fiel, Okeke, Vidolov, Zechner, Durkovic.

We went out attacking from the beginning, and Zechner scored an early goal of a wonderfull Vidolov through ball. Continuing on the attack, we had several more chances before Zechner's second shot of the match was pushed away by the goalkeper to an unmarked Okeke who converted an easy opportunity. Minutes after the goal, defender Daniel Ernemann limped off with a thigh strain and was replaced by Kozak. From there, we sat back, happy to defend the comfortable 2-0 lead until half time.

Neither side made changes at half time, and both had chances in the opening minutes. In the 51st minute, Unterhaching winger Stefan Lexa came on, and scored off a corner with his first touch. From thern on, it was all Union Berlin, as we piled on the pressure. They say attack is the best form of defence, and it was proven correct, as Beuckert did not have another touch of the ball, while we had several shots saved by Unterhaching goalkeeper Gerhald Tremmel. Finally, in the 82nd minute, a nice piece of play was finished when Kremenliev found Durkovic open in the box, and Bozo knocked in a fine volley to confirm a fine first-up 3-1 victory.

Goals: Zechner 4, Okeke 26, Durkovic 82

We arrived back in Berlin on Sunday late in the evening, and we were greeted by a delighted president. He congratulated us all on our performance. But half the team didn't even notice, because our "economic" team bus really didn't make for a comfortable ride. I think the players were just happy to get home.

The energy returned to the team by that afternoon because everyone was back to training very hard. It lasted the whole week. We had the luxury of a home evening match on Sunday night, meaning that the players had quite a bit of weekend.

But not for me. I was in my office working on new tactics for the greater part of the weekend. Our next game was against Gruether Furth, a team I regarded highly in the league. They had held Hannover to a draw in Hannover in the previous week, but I was hoping for a better outcome.

Second Division, Second Round v Gruether Furth (Home) 5-08-2001
Beuckert, Menze(c), Ernemann (Kozak 30), West, Kremenliev, Nikol, Fiel, Okeke, Vidolov, Ristic, Durkovic.

The first few minutes were a worrying first few minutes, where we were on the back foot. Okeke had our first chance from an amazing free-kick which was wonderfully saved by the Greuther goalkeeper. From there, we dominated the game. Nikol took the ball in the 16th minute, beat his man and a few other players, crossed the ball in along the ground to Durkovic who beat his marker and drove the ball into the net from close range. Everyone was having a shot. Ristic, Fiel, Vidolov, Okeke, West... but the goalkeeper did well on several occaisions to keep the scoreline respectable. That is, until the 37th minute when Fiel gathered the ball after several consecutive headers and drove the ball low from outside the box for our second goal. 2-0 Half Time.

The second half started as the first ended, with us on the attack.
Vidolov headed the ball down to Ristic, who took the ball forward before releasing Fiel who scored. Or so I thought untill i saw the linesman's flag up. Replays showed that Fiel was marginally offside. The further we got into the second half, the more defensive we got and the more that chances dried up. We were completely defending, and Beuckert got his chance of glory, with an amazing full stretch save in the last minutes, to keep his clean sheet. I think we were all relieved to hear the referee blow the final whistle for a great 2-0 victory.

Goals: Durkovic 16, Fiel 37.

Another week went by, Ernemann didn't come back from injury. Still a week for him to go it seems :(. Not much else happened in the week. We signed another scout, and that's about it. Next away game against Mainz, who lost their first two games.

Second Division, Third Round v Mainz (Away) 10-08-2001
Beuckert, Menze(c), Persich (Kozak 45), West, Kremenliev (Toursounidis 45), Nikol, Fiel, Okeke, Vidolov, Ristic, Durkovic (Zechner 56).

What can I say, the team gave an uninspired performance. There were no positives in the match, West was the only one who seemed to give a damn. They scored 2 quick goals in the 11th and 14th minutes, and it really took all the morale out of the team. Wingbacks didn't get back enough, making it too easy for them to get crosses in, and both of the first two goals were from crosses. West an Beuckert were really the only two who could hold their heads high after the first half and, without them, we would have gon further behind. Made a few changes at half time. Taking off Persich seemed to do well. The assistant warned me that he isn't the most determined player, and now I know why. Kozak played much better, and has in my mind established himself as number three centre back.

In the second half, our midfield dominated much more, but the strikers kept up the poor performance from the first half. Out of 8 shots on goal we had in the match, not one was on target. It sort of portrayed the team's performance as a whole. West and Kozak were great in defense for most of the second half. They made it 3-0 in the last play of the match, when their striker somehow found himself alone in front of goal.

3-0 in my mind did not do justice to the statistics in the match, we didn't play that badly, but I think it was a fair indication of how hard the team tried in this match :kader:
Goals: N/A :(

This week was a complete contrast to a quiet last week. We aquired the services of two Portugese youth players, 18 year old midfielder Hugo Miguel Viana and 19 year old half namibian striker Gisvi.

There were half a dozen transfer bids for Divic, meaning that he will probably be on his way soon.

Perisch came out in the media and publically announced that he felt my warning was harsh, although he WAS the cause of the first two goals that Mainz scored.

Everyone was working very hard in training to make up for last weekend's poor performance, and to be ready for the big home game against Hannover.

Okeke was called up to the Nigeria squad for a friendly, despite my attempts to keep him with us for the big game. In his absence I announced that Kreminliev was going into the defensive midfield position, and Toursounidis was going to make his debut in the wingback position.

Second Division, Fourth Round v Hannover 96(Home) 19-08-2001
Beuckert, Menze(c), ErnemannWest, Toursounidis, Nikol, Fiel, Kremenliev, Vidolov, Ristic (Zechner 45), Durkovic .

Hannover scored with their first shot of the game, after Simak's chip found Stendel free on goal. And they kept attacking for 30 or so minutes. From there on, it was all Union. We were on the attack for the rest of the game, but could not find a goal in the first half.

The second half began with the sending-off of Hannover centre back Oliver Schafer. I replaced Ristic with Zechner and it paid off instantly, with Fiel putting the ball through to Zechner in the box. Zechner had one beautiful touch to beat the keeper, and tapped the ball into the net. We piled on the pressure, and had another goal disallowed in the 63rd minute. It was, when the 4th official indicated time added on, that Toursounidis got the ball, beat two players and curved the ball beautifully into the top corner from range, in a great piece of individual skill. The final score of 2-1 was a fair indication of this closely fought match.

Goals: Zechner 50, Toursounidis 90.

After the round was finished, we found ourselves equal first with two other teams. Chifon was sold, and we aquired the services of 16 year old striker Erdal Kilicaslan.

I'm not far either - I'm going for quality in the story rather than a quickie and quantity of seasons...glad to see you're doing the same..;)

Well, this week both of our lonaned players were purchaced by other clubs. Chifon went to Freiburg for $400k. and Divic went to Borussia Monchengladbach for $1.6 mil. No real news apart from that though, as we prepared for the first round of the German Cup against Schalke 04.

German Cup, 1st Round v Schalke 04(Home) 25-08-2001
Beuckert, Menze(c), Ernemann, West, Kremenliev, Nikol, Fiel, Okeke, Vidolov, Ristic, Durkovic.

We started attacking, and then Schalke attacked. And we attacked again. Then them, then us then them etc... The first 20 minutes pretty much were a description of the match. In the 22nd minute, Nikol lobbed it right to Vidolov who lobbed it right to Ristic, who crossed it to Kremenliev, who headed the ball in.
The match continued in it's zig-zagged sort of way, until Schalke scored through Thon. HT 1-1.

The second half was the same. We attack, they attack etc. Schalke scored, and I thought it was over, before seeing the linesman's flag up; bringing a loud cheer from the Union fans behind us. The roar was heard again minutes later in the 76th minute, when Schalke goalkeeper Stelea took Nikol out in the box and was sent off for a professional foul. Okeke easily converted the penalty, and we sat back a bit. Our defense was rock solid, giving one hundred and ten percent to keep alive our lead in the last 25 minutes or so. Final score 2-1, and we're through. Nikol was named man of the match for his 40ish completed passes in the match and his penalty.

Goals: Kremenliev 22, Okeke 76(pen).

Our prayers for an easier opponent in the second round were answered when we were drawn away to Division Two strugglers Ahlen, who we play against twice in two games.
