To end the PES3 vs FIFA 2004 debate

This topic of which game is better than another comes down to a matter of personal opinion.

As far as I'm concerned, PES 3 offers a realistic experience, and is the pick of the two for those after a realistic, true-to-life football experience, especially since patches are available to change team and player names to the real ones. PES 3 should also appeal more to those who like editing and customizing the game.

On the other hand, FIFA games are easier to pick up and master, and for those looking for a simple, but reasonable, simulation of football, where they just want to have a bit of a laugh with their mates or on their own, and don't have the time or patience to fully master PES 3, then FIFA 2004 would probably be better.

Technically, PES 3 is probably "better" as such, but there are genuine reasons as to why some gamers may prefer FIFA.

Nice attempt, but aren't forums to discuss things?
Isn't the PES vs FIFA forum just to discuss the two games?

See, this is the point. I think it take time to master Fifa and dont agree with you above. I have both games and think PES3 is more accessable thats why more people prefer it in their arguments. Of course Fifa has loads of frustrations, but if it had been play tested by soccer lovers and the points implemented then those could have been ironed out and it would have been a great game instead of just good. But I picked up PES straight away though there is probably more to learn than I have, but I dont think Fifa is so easy to pick up straight away.

I agree fully with you.
If you learn about all gamepad handlings (especially the through passes using the RIGHT analog stick, which is really hard to master) you really need time. Also using the right strategies and formation settings (including the attacking and defending attitudes) need time to make optimal use.

I never said Fifa 2004 wasn't a great game. Of course, there are many great aspects to Fifa 2004.

Point taken about the greater complexity. What I said in the initial post held more for earlier versions of Fifa than for Fifa 2004, since for advanced players of Fifa, there is the "Off the Ball" mode, which is tricky to master but can pay dividends if worked at. Undoubtedly, EA Sports (possibly in view of the fact that PES was coming to PC) did try, with success, to add more depth to their latest incarnation of Fifa. However, there is very little doubt that PES is a game with depth.

I think the main point I was making, though, regardless of opinions on how challenging or good the games are relative to each other, was that there are different reasons for people preferring one game to the other. Some will prefer PES3, others will prefer FIFA 2004. Maybe the title of the thread was inappropriate- of course there's nothing wrong with discussing the two games- but I meant to say that there's no point in, say, PES fans slagging off FIFA fans, or vice versa. That's not a discussion, that's an argument.

I would argue that it is far easier for someone who has played soccer before to pickup PES, than it is to play FIFA. When I first played FIFA against a friend, neither of us had touched the game before, but he had far more experience than me with console games. He easily beat me. Move onto PES, and actual soccer knowledge comes into play alot more. I find it difficult to break down the defences of friends who don't play PES much, but know soccer. In PES, the defensive AI assists the players a great deal, especially if playing with someone like Italy, which has the strongest defense. Furthermore, I have a great many friends who have not played much soccer, but get enjoyment out of playing PES. My opinion is that PES supplies a more enjoyable experience for the new player, as well as accomodating some real depth for those experienced players who take the time to learn all the tricks; dragbacks, chips etc.

My advice to players who haven't played much multiplayer PES is the following - never go for a slide tackle, always stay on your feet, never try and be aggressive in taking the ball off someone (they will just get past you), and use [] and X to apply pressure on the ball carrier. I find players who have never played much before can thwart my attacks very effectively using the above strategies. Unfortunately, there is no such readily available advice I can give for attacking. Attacking play takes experience and patience to master, especially ball retention against a good opponent.

It's kindof sad how the only people who post here are the ones jaded by FIFA 2004.

And as for "ending the debate", lol, you are hardly doing that by saying... "everyone has their opinion... but I think PES3 is better"

You aren't saying anything that hasn't already been said. Heck, this whole section of the forum is devoted to PES vs FIFA arguments/discussions. If you don't like em, don't visit this section lol.
