PES5 - PS2 Review

Unfortunaltey I have had some e-mails back and forth with the FA Premier folk and they state that they are very happy with the licence from EA and don't expect to change anytime soon. That's too bad in terms of licencing.

Hopefully the Xbox version will be slower paced with more realistic shots and headers.

BTW Wolf are chips still easy as hell to score ( the L1 + shots one not the double tap one ) or is the keeper smarter in PES5?

In terms of ball physics, the game is perfect as can be except for the speed the thing travels, which for headers is super unrealistic at times and for shots, I don't think there's many players in the world who can make the ball travel accurately on shots from some of those distances consistenly but almost every player in PES5 can do it with the power bar not even half-way! In terms of weight and bounce, I doubt FIFA will ever, ever master ball physics as well as Konami unless they simply copycat it.

It makes you wonder if they deliberately made the game 1.5x faster to counter slowdowns. Remember the old questions we used to get with PES3/4 that if you can incorporate the double-speed option that works into the game, why the hell do we still have slowdowns. Well maybe this is the fix. 1.5x speed of PES4 so you don't notice the slowdowns so much. Even then, the ball still travels faster relatively to the speeded up players. It's like the players move 1.5x the speed of PES4 but the ball moves 2x the speed of PES4.

The default setting of FIFA is the same deal, too freaking fast but on the slower setting it's about the same speed or a little slower than WE9 which to me is realistic.

I agree with the comment of having to shoot or pass almost immediately because even against containment teams you don't have more than 1 second on the ball before somebody comes to make a tackle so in true terms, no team in the game actually plays containment even if the settings are such. They all play pressure. Not realistic for the style of some of the teams in real life where players will often get a good few seconds on the ball before passing, etc. but in PES5 it's rare you get more than a second before at least one player is coming in as if their team is 1-0 down with 30 seconds of the game left!

Guys, let's be realistic about PES5 and not make it to be the god of soccer gaming when it's not. There are still a lot of faults in the game and if we don't truly recognise them and make Konami aware of them, the series will never improve. That's what happened to FIFA for 5 years. The FIFA fanboys used to shoot you down or even ban you on the forums if any negative words about FIFA were spoken (even on Soccer Gaming) and as a result, the series never really evolved because the feedback to EA was constantly ass-kissing. We need to make sure Konami know when there are dissatisfied rumblings with their games and something is there which we don't like (even something minor like at throw-ins where the player keeps fake throwing the ball 2x a second like he's having a fit - they didn't have to introduce this!). I love Konami and I've loved the WE/PES series but I want the games to get better and better, not just with licenses, that's almost out of their control but we need to make sure when stuff isn't a move in the right direction, and few people will agree the super speed of PES5 is a more positive move compared to PES4, then we let them know it needs to change.

I've only played the demo. Here are my views on the things you mentioned.

1. High speed headers: I've scored headers of various speeds. From very slow to blazing fast. They don't look unrealistic to me.

2. Powerful shots: This is borderline for me. In a way I agree that shots look to be too fast and accurate on some players with the middle shooting stat. But then I see goals like the one scored on Real Madrid by the Olympiakos player. IMO the speed and accuracy may only be off by a small fraction.

3. Dribbling: I think the AI shouldn't press you the entire game the way it does. They always go for the tackle no matter what. It's unrealistic in that sense. The player should be given more time on the ball and the AI should position itself infront of the player and wait for him to make a move. Not all the time but sometimes in one on ones. However it isn't impossible to make great runs. I skipped past 3 defenders with Ronaldo yesterday before scoring a beautiful goal.

Final thought: I think the shooting is near perfect. It just needs some slight adjustments. As for the opponent AI, I just don't think it's possible to improve on the current generation of consoles. Seabass said it himself. The current consoles limit what he can do. C'mon, he has to sacrifice the audience just so that the gameplay doesn't slow down. The new consoles will give him much more freedom to do all the things he wants to do with the AI. I think we'll be really happy with WE10. For now WE9/PES5 is the best soccer game available, although slightly flawed.

I've been playing pro evo since the first time it came out (ever remember that ps game goalstorm? that was like the first game based around the PES engine) and i've loved it ever since.

This year with much excitement when i got winning eleven 9 I felt a bit let down while playing it, couldnt quite put me finger on what it was but i felt frustration. After giving it time it got better and its a definetely a better game overall and with PES 5 they have improved quite a few things on WE9 but they seem to have made it fast again. It also has one annoying feature, the dive where the goalkeeper sort of dives sideways, its really annoying and unrealistic and wrecks alot of the goals that are scored :D

I to have kind of found myself playing FIFA more, I've given it a little chance and they have improved a lot this year, its a very playable game. They've tried to take out all the crap 'gimmicks' and just make it a playable game :D

I think when pes 5 comes out on pc and online is available I will mainly play that cause i think two player PES 5 is just gonna be awesome, the computer AI at the moment does not do the game justice.

I think its time to stop bitiching to people who like both games. I agree with Wolf and everything hes said has been valid. At the end of the day no one has a go at someone for playing two different FPS Shooters like Half Life 2 and Doom 3.

FIFA 2006 and PES 5 are two different interpretations of the game of football, both playable dependent on what mood your in really. PES 5 still out in front overall but nothing wrong with enjoying summit else every so often :D

The entire Chelsea squad plays the game, John Terry has been quoted saying that, also mentioning they have tournaments amongst everyone and that Glen Johnson is their best player.

Now while I agree with Wolf on a lot about PES5 , the speed of the ball and fast closing down and all that ..

I have played the Fifa demo and while movement and off the ball runs are good, the ball is nowhere near as good as in PES and in Fifa the ball moves far to fast in shots and passing ...

So while I think PES5 with faster passing faster players and AI closing you down quicker , has speeded up the game..

PES5 is a better game, the ball physics in Fifa are not on a par with that of PES and after all, if the balls not right then that affects the rest of the game ..

The NTSC option is still there which is cool.

So, If I purchase PAL version for PES5, I can play it into my PS2 console for the North America & Canada version (NTSC/U/C designation) ? :o

Not for the PS2, only the PAL version but my mod chip runs it as it auto-converts PAL to NTSC. The NTSC version comes out Oct 4th/5th.
Thanks for the review Wolf. :)

As you've said this years FIFA is pretty good, a great game even if PES wasn't around and I enjoy playing it, but there's one thing about it and that is it can't keep me playing for hours on end like WE/PES can. I don't know why but it just doesn't keep me entertained for long periods.

It's fun for now but in a couple of months I can see my self playing it a lot less while PES5 will last me all the way till PES6. I'll play both like I did last year and I'll enjoy FIFA a lot more now and I think in a year or two with the new developers I think it will be getting very, very close to the game I love so much. :)

The goalkeepers do DO 1 handed saves, twice now I have seen this.

Now now Wolf, I meant no offence by my comment as stated, why the beef?!

Now that you've proven that you're a proffesional player I respect your opinion very highly. Tell me, what was the name of the European club you served for so long?

So, the entire Chelsea squad play PES, so that's about 50 players shall we say?

50 = 5 x 10

SHAZAM!

@ Oliver Kalm - Get the **** off Wolf's balls, nutrider
