A new year, and we should probably look back at the cinema highlights of the last year.
I didnt think it was a particularly good year for films to be honest. Lots of great rereleases (Citizen Kane, 400 Blows, The Godfather etc) but not many new films which really impressed me. Mind you, I've missed more films than usual last year, so maybe that explains it.
These are my top fifteen films of 2009, based on what I can remember seeing and, of course, British release dates.
1. Tony Manero
2. The Class
3. Katyn
4. Encounters and the End of the World
5. Synecdoche New York
6. The Karamazovs
7. The White Ribbon
8. A Serious Man
9. Bad Lieutenant
10. Inglorious Basterds
11. Mesrine Parts 1 & 2
12. The Hurt Locker
13. Moon
14. In The Loop
15. Tyson
Interesting that my top three are all foreign language films. Tony Manero is the only Chilean film I've ever seen (to my knowledge) and is also by far my favourite film of 2009, reaching new depths of psycological examination and dark tension. The Class was the only other masterpiece of the year, slow but totally gripping and very moving. Herzog is the only director with two in my top 15, Encounters was simply the best documentary I've seen since Herzog's last documentary, and Bad Lieutentant was impressive, though not as good as it could have been. A Serious Man was by far the best comedy, In the Loop the only other on my list and that only because I really like satire. Bruno almost made it, but on reflection it did have quite a few faults. Inglorious Basterds was probably the most entertaining film of the year, but on reflection was actually a particularly good movie, and Moon is, very surprisingly, the only British film on my list (though I didnt see An Education). The Karamazovs, and brilliant Czech movie, was the big surprise for me, White Ribbon was probably the most beautiful film of the year, the Mesrine movies were the best action flicks, and, well, yeah.
I'll post my top performances of the year and some other stuff later, but what were your favourite movies and what did you think of the year as a whole?
